Will.i.am unveils tech-driven face mask

Developed with Honeywell, the Xupermask includes a HEPA air filtration system, noise-canceling audio and microphone capabilities, and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.

After getting the idea while traveling on a plane in the midst of the pandemic, Will.i.am presents a technology-driven smart face mask, a joint venture with manufacturer Honeywell. Xupermask will be available on April 8 for $ 299, equipped with three dual-speed fans and a Honeywell High Efficiency Particle-Resistant (HEPA) air filtration system. It also includes noise-canceling audio and microphone capabilities, along with Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity and daytime LED lights.

To help with the design, Will.i.am enlisted the help of Jose Fernandez,who, through his Ironhead Studio, a costume and creature design company, has created costumes for films including The Incredible Spider-Man, X-Men United and The Avengers. Jose and Ironhead made the first prototype of this mask, ”he reports.

Will.i.am traces the idea back to March 2020, when he was in London preparing to return home. He thought: Let’s make a mask for the traveler, because the masks we have were never intended for everyday use, not for people who interface with technology, headphones and phones. People take off their masks and the headphones fall off. He also wanted to give the mask a sturdy seal; a loose fit is one of the reasons your glasses fog up.

Will.i.am tells Hollywood journalist that he also sees this launch as a notable example for Black Tech innovators. I would like to add how happy and delighted I am about this collaboration with Honeywell. There aren’t many black tech entrepreneurs. The job I do downtown, teaching kids about computer science, robotics, and engineering, confirms that while there aren’t many people like them in tech, good ideas are needed. So this partnership means a lot, not only to me, but also to the 1,200 children I support in the neighborhood I come from.

Created in two colors white / gray / orange and black / black / orange, the Xupermask comes in two sizes and comes with a carrying case, a three-month supply of HEPA filters, ear tips and a USB-C charging cable.
