Marist College fashion students team up with Walkway to create merchandise

POUGHKEEPSIE – In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the opening of Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, a team of students in fashion design and fashion merchandising at Marist College teamed up with the Friends of the Walkway to design, create and sell a capsule collection of merchandise edition on the Walkway. The pop-up shop run by the Marists will be open to all park visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in April.

Over 20 unique and never-seen-before items will be on sale, including clothing, jewelry, homeware, wall art, souvenirs, and note cards. Each piece in the collection is designed to connect to one or more of the following themes: the beauty of Walkway Over the Hudson, its history as a railway bridge, the glory of the Hudson River, the importance of environmental sustainability and the strong connection between the Walkway campus and Marists Poughkeepsie. Everything is available in strictly limited quantities while stocks last.

In addition to the merchandise, Marist students of the School of Communication and the Arts produce a short documentary film on the program, are responsible for developing social media and marketing plans to promote the collection and create unique pieces of visual art inspired by the Hudson River Bridge and Valley to be included in raffles and silent auctions at Walkway events.

Marist donates the cost of all materials, production and profits to support Friends of the Hudson Footbridge and its mission to bring programs and amenities, including an electric tram to the park , to undertake capital projects such as the installation of lighting on the bridge, and provide a friendly and welcoming experience to more than 600,000 annual visitors.

The fashion program at Marist successfully prepares its students to enter the fashion world. Students gain skills, knowledge and internship experience in an encouraging academic environment to help them thrive in the fashion industry. With a full program leading to a Bachelor of Science for Fashion Merchandising or a Bachelor of Fine Arts for Fashion Design, Marist is ranked among the fashion programs globally by industry publication, Fashion business.

This capsule merchandise collection is the latest in a long line of key partnerships between Marist and the Walkway. When Walkway Over the Hudson opened in 2009, the college designed and hosted its first website. Marist also provided vital assistance in translating Walkways audio tours, called Talkways, into Spanish, Mandarin and Italian, among many other projects.
