Power Dressing: menswear is hit with energetic colors and utilitarian details for summer

It was built at the turn of the century when inventors such as Nikola Tesla, George Westinghouse and Thomas Edison were locked in a fierce battle dubbed the War of Currents to see who could bring electricity to the masses first.

It was 1901 and an American lawyer named William Birch Rankine had raised the $5.2 million needed to build the first hydroelectric power station on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, where Tesla and Westinghouses alternating current technology was to be used (ahead of Edison, a proponent of direct current) to transport electricity to western New York and southern Ontario. It was a monumental undertaking. The technology was new, the financial stakes were high, and the dangers were all too real for the hundreds of workers who used rudimentary steam engines and literal power to blast rock, dig tunnels, and haul stone to build. the Canadian Niagara Power Company.

When completed in 1905, the 60,000 square foot facility was considered an architectural, design and engineering marvel. The team that has spent the past two years painstakingly restoring it to its former glory believe it still is today. Back then, people were building with exceptional materials, says Marcelo Gruosso, senior engineering manager responsible for the $25 million renovation of what is now called the Niagara Parks Power Plant. The entire structure is in limestone, granite, slate, stainless steel, copper, marble, nickel and brass. It was built to last and make a great first impression. The latter was important, says Gruossa, because in the early 1900s, hydroelectric power plants were a radically new concept. Rankine built, in effect, a monument to electricity because he wanted to inspire confidence in investors and the public that this technology was not only legitimate, but was going to be around for a very long time.

Last summer, the first phase of the renovation opened and guests got their first glimpse of Generator Hall with its massive 11 generators (painted Ford blue), graceful arched windows, interactive exhibits and retail space. by retail. In July, visitors will be able to explore the underground levels for the first time. Guests will ride two 180-foot glass elevators through the vast underground portions of the powerhouse where they will arrive at the 2,000-square-foot Tailrace Tunnel, said Kim Viney, senior manager of business development for Niagara Parks. Guests can walk through the massive tunnel before arriving at a new viewing platform that overlooks the lower Niagara River just below Horseshoe Falls.

Eventually, Gruosso and his team also hope to restore the upper levels, which include the control room (sounds like something straight out of star trek, he says) and the administration offices, where plans call for two more observation decks that will overlook the falls. Architecturally, I admire the beauty of this place, but I’m also impressed by the ingenuity and courage that went into building it, says Gruosso. It’s amazing to me how these inventors were able to bring all these abstract concepts to life and bring them together.

Viney agrees, adding that it is believed to be the last powerhouse of this vintage that is fully intact. We call it the cathedral of power, she says. We think it’s a perfect name for a facility that was so ahead of its time.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
