Smeeton wins steeplechase crown, Golden breaks heptathlon school record on day two of Big 12 Outdoor Championships

LUBBOCK, TX Oklahoma State Outdoor Athletics followed up its Big 12 Outdoor Championship wins on Saturday with several impressive performances, highlighted by Ryan Smeton get on the top step of the Steeplechase podium.

Smeeton won his second career Big 12 championship in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in dominant fashion, leading from start to finish and crossing the line six seconds ahead of his teammate. Will Muirhead with a time of 8:47.87. The Cowboys swept the top three spots on the podium, with Smeeton, Muirhead and Victor Chitsama sail to victory and earn 24 team points in the process.

Earlier in the day, Bailey Golden broke the school record in the women’s heptathlon, scoring 5,802 points en route to third place overall. Golden broke her previous personal best in the event by 277 points and unofficially moved her up to ninth place in the NCAA. Her teammate Olivija Vaitaityte also broke the previous school record in the event, scoring 5,770 points in her fourth place finish.

Both Cowgirl Heptathletes have likely secured their spot at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon next month as they currently sit ninth and tenth in the nation. The top 24 athletes in the event qualify for the national championships.

“Bailey had the performance we knew was in her for a few years,” throwing, multis and jumps coach Josh Langley mentioned. “She was calm and composed all weekend and just executed her events.
I also think that Olivija is the best freshman in the country right now and getting that score in her freshman year says a lot about her willingness to buy into what we’re doing here. She’s a great competitor with a bright future.”

Max Braht continued the success of the multis, placing eighth in the Decathlon with 7,042 points after starting day 12and globally. Braht finished the final two events, the javelin and the 1,500 meters, fourth and third to secure the All-Big 12 finish.

“Breaking the 7,000 point barrier is a big deal,” Langley said. “Max performed well, but he absolutely wanted himself at this mark. From a pole vaulter who asked to change events because he just wanted to find a way to contribute. What a trip and a great way to get out.”

The preliminaries for the running events began on Saturday afternoon with the 1,500 meters. National champion Taylor Roe won her heat with a time of 4:19.07 and was the top finisher in the preliminary round. Heidi Demeo and Sivan Auerbach also qualified for Sunday’s final with the top three finishes in each of their heats. The Cowboys and Cowgirls return Sunday for the final day of competition. The Cowboys are currently fourth in the standings with 37 points and the Cowgirls just behind in fifth with 26 points in two days of action. Competition begins at 7:00 a.m. CT with the men’s and women’s 5,000 meters, which have been moved to the morning due to forecast triple-digit temperatures in Lubbock.
