The Hillary Clinton Met Gala dress included a tribute to women
The claim: Hillary Clinton wore a dress to the Met Gala with references to a baseless conspiracy theory
For the first time in 21 yearsformer Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attended the Met Gala in early May.
Soon after, a photo began circulating online showing Clinton in a dress covered in names.
Since appearing at the annual event, the dress she wore has drawn attention on social media, including a picture of Clinton in her dress posted on Facebook which was shared more than 2,000 times in four days.
The photo shows Clinton walking the red carpet in her off-the-shoulder burgundy dress with the names of conspiracy theories and individuals like Jeffery Epstein, JFK Jr. and Paula Jones written across the top of her dress.
Miscellaneous positions with the picture have been shared thousands of times on social networks.
Clinton’s real dress had the names subtly sewn onto it, of dozens of famous women. But this image has been digitally manipulated to reference a range of conspiracy theories surrounding Clinton, including baseless claims linking the deaths of various people close to her and former President Bill Clinton.
Commenters generally recognized the image as edited, but seized on the photo to resurface a series of claims about these conspiracy theories.

USA TODAY has reached out to the user who shared the claim for comment.
The altered image is linked to conspiracy theories
Met Gala Photos show that Clinton’s dress did not feature these names.
The dress that Clinton wore had 60 embroidered names tops of famous women who inspire him, includingLady Bird Johnson, Clara Barton and Harriet Tubman.
The names featured on the dress in the edited image are those that Clinton is often linked to on social media as part of the baselessClinton body count conspiracy theory: the idea that the Clintons secretly killed their political enemies.
For years, Fact check and media outlets have debunked claims of this nature, but that hasn’t stopped their constant spread online.
The theory has a long history, dating from 1993when Linda Thompson, an Indianapolis lawyer and activist in the militia movement, created a list of 34 people connected to the deceased Clintons.
For example,Vince Fostera former Clinton associate who died by suicide, appeared on both Thompson’s list from 1993 and the altered image of the dress that circulated on Facebook.
In 2016, Detailed Voice why Foster’s conspiracy theory had no basis in fact: Foster was found in a park with a bullet to the head and a gun in his hand, and the United States Park Police and FBI say that he had committed suicide.

Jefferey Epstein’s name also appears several times on the dress, a nod to Bill Clinton’s ties to Epstein. After Epstein’s death in 2019,conspiracy theories propagated onlinelinking his death to Hillary Clinton. A few days after his death, the New York Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said his cause of death was suicide by hanging.

The photo has been digitally manipulated to include the names of individuals from the baseless Clinton conspiracy theory and other conspiracy theories surrounding Clinton. Fact checkers and news organizations have repeatedly denied claims that the Clintons are responsible for a whole host of deaths.
