Challenge the Cloth (CTF), held recently in Paris, France, brought together leaders from the fashion, textile and forestry industries to drive collective change. For the second edition of the CTF, industry professionals participated in roundtables focused on cross-industry collaboration and innovation.

By connecting leading brands and forward-thinking suppliers, CTF is increasing awareness of bio-based man-made cellulosic fiber (MMCF) materials. The pioneering initiative presented a unique opportunity for the entire supply chain to come together and take action for change.

At the CTF Symposium held on May 17, barriers to growth and opportunities for collective action within the fashion, textile and forestry industries were identified. Eminent panelists included Sara Mariani, Director of Sustainability at OTB Group, Christine Goulay, Global Director at Pangaia Science, Dio Kurazawa, Co-Founder of Bear Scouts, Shahriare Mahmood, Director of Sustainability at Spinnova, Romain Brabo, Co- LVMH Founder Nona Source, Komal Singh, Senior Color and Materials Designer at Polestar, Shameek Ghosh, CEO and Co-Founder at TrusTrace, Johannes Bogren, VP at Södra Cell Bioproducts, Caroline Ledl, Head of Product Management at Lenzing, Dr. Marina Crnoja-Cosic, Director of New Business Development at Kelheim Fibers GmbH, Marion Henry, Head of Sourcing and Impact Strategy at Balzac Paris and more, organizers said in a press release. .

The second edition of Challenge the Fabric, held on May 17 in Paris, France, brought together leaders from the fashion, textile and forest industries to drive collective change. By connecting leading brands and forward-thinking suppliers, Challenge the Fabric is raising awareness of bio-based man-made cellulosic fiber (MMCF) materials.

“Material innovations are key to solving the unsustainable pressure on our planet’s resources. Cross-industry collaboration helps expose innovators, opposing industries to meaningful hardware solutions and practices that are often unknown or overlooked. I’m so impressed with the Swedish Fashion Council and Ekman & Co, and their work with the Challenge the Fabric initiative,” said Dio Kurazawa, co-founder, The Bear Scouts VOF.

The roundtables delved into themes of cross-industry work, as well as challenges and opportunities with MMCF from a brand and producer perspective. In addition, the panels highlighted existing issues facing pulp producers and their desire to address them, as well as the current and future state of next-generation feedstocks. Industry members expressed their common goals to shift the demand for textiles from fossil fuels and the implementation of sustainable production processes to reduce the carbon footprint.

The CTF provides a venue for actors from across the value chain to meet and open dialogue on MMCF. Over the course of the day, it became clear that conversations between brands, suppliers and producers need to happen on a regular basis.

“Challenge the Fabric occupies a unique place in today’s landscape of sustainable fashion and innovation. By bringing together brands (large and small), supply chain partners, innovators and experts, we can come together to work towards real change,” said Christine Goulay, Global Director, Pangaia Science.

The global event, initiated by Ekman & Co and organized by the Swedish Fashion Council, took place at the Swedish Institute in Paris and is a long-term initiative. Challenge the Fabric was first launched during London Fashion Week in 2018. For this first edition, talents from the world’s top-ranked design schools were nominated for the CTF Award with a mission to create designs from MMCF tissues. The winner, selected by distinguished jurors of global industry professionals, received the prestigious CTF prize of €30,000. The Challenge the Fabric advisory board is made up of IKEA of Sweden, Textile Exchange, Kelheim Fibres, Swedish Fashion Council and Ekman & Co.

“Collaboration was a key topic throughout the COTF symposium. Behind this is the commitment of companies, researchers, innovative startups and experts to join forces to create real purpose and develop projects,” commented Sara Mariani, Director of Sustainable Development, OTB.

“Innovations on cellulosic fiber are so critical to solving challenges in the fashion industry. CTF is truly able to bring stakeholders together to give it impact and accelerate progress,” said Shahriare Mahmood, Director of Sustainable Development, Spinnova.

“Challenge The Fabric brings a new dimension to discussions about how to accelerate the sustainable transformation of fashion. It brings together industry players across the MMCF supply chain in innovative ways, from fiber producers to brands to technology and innovation solution providers. TrusTrace is committed to sustainable transformation through traceability and Challenge the Fabric is a great platform,” commented Shameek Ghosh, CEO, TrusTrace.

“Collaboration is key to driving change. The objective of the Challenge the Fabric event was to create a platform to increase dialogue between the various stakeholders in the MMCF supply chain, in order to accelerate development. We are very satisfied with the outcome of CTF2022 and we will continue to maintain the dialogue,” said Nina Elmersson, Vice President Ekman Innovare.

“Cross-sector collaborations are key to accelerating work towards a more sustainable future. Challenge the Fabric will create long-term impact for the global fashion industry,” said Jennie Rosén, CEO of the Swedish Fashion Council.
