The strict dress code for each of the four grounds of Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot is back, with the famous horse racing event taking place from Tuesday to Saturday. Held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, UK, the five-day event brings together many of the best horses from Ireland and the UK, to compete across 28 races, for a total prize pool of over of 38.6 million MAD.

This year the event is back at full capacity, with one of the most anticipated fashion events, Ladies Day, taking place on Thursday. This is where women show up with the biggest and most extravagant hats imaginable.

To view the race, the spectator areas are divided into four enclosures, each with its own dress code. To help racing fans navigate them, Ascot now has its own website and style guide that lists the do’s and don’ts of clothing, highlighting the importance of getting it right.

Arriving in the wrong outfit won’t put you at risk of being kicked out of a venue where you’ve spent a lot of money, but may require you to leave the event altogether. Here we break it down by domain. There are four enclosures, of which only three are open to the public, the royal enclosure being reserved for members and their guests.

Royal Enclosure

As the grandest of the four enclosures, it’s no surprise that it has the strictest rules regarding what visitors can and cannot wear.

Ladies must wear formal day wear to enter the royal enclosure, which may be a dress or a top and skirt, but must fall below the knee or longer. Best practice is also to cover the shoulders and upper arms, but a strappy top or dress is allowed if the straps are wider than 2.5 centimeters. Strapless, spaghetti, backless, off the shoulder or Bardot necklines are not acceptable.

Straps or sleeves must not be sheer or see-through, however, lace is permitted. While jumpsuits are welcome, the pants should be full length and both should match in material and color. As an alternative, jumpsuits are acceptable, but like hemming, they should fall below the knee. Shorts or anything that exposes the belly are absolutely forbidden.

Women are required to wear a hat at all times at Ascot, and in the Royal Enclosure this can also mean headgear, but only if the sturdy base is over 10cm in diameter. A fascinator is not allowed.

Men must also dress down, and a black, gray or navy blue morning dress, with a waistcoat, is required for this area. Men should wear a tie, not a necktie or bow tie, and only wear black shoes with socks. Top hats are also compulsory, but unlike women, men are allowed to remove their headgear if they are in a restaurant, private box, private club or on the terrace, balcony or the garden.

They are not allowed to personalize top hats with ribbons, bands or badges, and may not wear fancy vests. Discreet patterns and anything that has a “patriotic” character are allowed as long as the colors are sober. So if you fancy sporting that Union Jack vest that’s been tucked away for years, you’re in luck, as long as it’s not too shiny.

In each enclosure, people in national dress or in military service dress are welcome.

Queen Anne enclosure

As it is still formal, guests are reminded to dress accordingly, however, it is a bit more relaxed than the royal enclosure. For women, this means that the head should always be covered at all times, but now a hat, headpiece and fascinator are all deemed appropriate.

Like the Royal Pregnant, women’s outfits must not be strapless, off the shoulder, bardot or one-shoulder, but a backless dress is acceptable, as long as it is not strapless or any other of the above restrictions. -above. Trousers and jumpsuits are both fine, but must follow the same guidelines as the royal enclosure, and culottes are also allowable, but only if they fall below the knee. Shorts are still not, regardless of their length.

Men are required to wear a full-length suit in matching designs and colors, with a collared shirt and tie. Again, bow ties and ties are not permitted, and while shoes no longer have to be black, they must adhere to dark colors. Socks must also be worn and must cover the ankle. Jeans, trainers or chinos are prohibited.

Village enclosure

While the written dress code remains the same as the first two speakers, in reality it’s much more casual. Women should always wear a hat, but this can be extended to a stylized turban, feather halo or fascinator.

Separates are now a safe option, but keep things complementary, like a patterned pink blouse over a plain pink skirt to keep it looking “polished.”

As this enclosure is on grass, the venue suggests wearing block heels or wedges instead of stilettos to avoid sinking in the mud and to keep hat sizes small, preferably a fascinator so you don’t block the view.

Men, on the other hand, must wear long trousers and a jacket, although these do not necessarily match, and as before, must wear a collared shirt and tie. Ties can be colorful, but again muted patterns/decorations are encouraged.

Windsor enclosure

This has the most relaxed code of them all, with suggestions to wear “elegant attire” topped with a hat or fascinator. For women, that might mean printed silk pajamas with a fascinator, or a tea dress with low heels and a feathered Alice band.

Men can relax too, and while they’re encouraged to wear a jacket, collared shirt and long pants, these don’t have to match, so have fun mixing and matching plaid pants with a blazer, as long as it comes with a tie.
