It is normal for a wedding dress to always fit | Kpcnews

I was outside watering my garden the other night and watched the water drip from my roses at dusk in the evening. There is something so beautiful, so quiet in my neighborhood at the end of the day. A few children were still running and a lone cyclist continued to pedal, probably taking advantage of the evening coolness. My roses are beautiful this year and I think it may be the hot days, but they are tall and rigorous and because they are of the old-fashioned variety they smell divine.

The scent of flowers, like the sound of music, plunges us back into our memory of stories. As a child, helping weed the garden wasn’t my favorite activity, even though the roses smelled divine. My father always said, wait until you have your own garden! He was certainly right. So while I was enjoying those roses, I immediately thought of the bridal shower I gave my niece, Cinnamon, many, many full moons ago. It was June, and all my boys, big and small, went fishing. My gardens were beautiful in June and by chance (and I can’t even remember how it happened) I ordered 50 tussie-mussie supports from Berlin, Germany. They were sturdier than doilies and shaped like a cone with a hole for a small bouquet.

The term tussie-mussie dates back to Queen Victoria in the late 1800s. She was very fond of carrying small bouquets wherever she went, so she had fresh flowers put in small holders for her to carry. The word tussie actually refers to a bouquet and the word mussie refers to the moss that was wrapped around the stems to keep them cool.

On the night of the Cinnamons wedding shower, I hand-picked dozens of roses and herbs from my garden and, as everyone presented her with a flower (and read the meaning of the flower that l ‘accompanies), she placed them inside the tussie-mussie. We tied a ribbon around the base and she had a beautiful bouquet for her wedding rehearsal. While watering my roses, I thought of this story. It’s amazing I still have a few somewhere!

With a bouquet of roses in hand, I pulled out an old mason jar to place them in. Roses and weddings go hand in hand in June. (Oh, not mine, but the others!) I stopped to pause, thinking about our chapel in the gardens. It must have been so wonderful to stop in Angola to get married at the Wedding Mill. It was the tourist attraction for many young couples!

In less than two hours, a couple could come to town, get the blood tests done, and be married. An Indiana law in the 1940s did not impose the waiting period, and here we are, two steps between three states! Not just a wedding, but you could get your license, your cake, your flowers, and even rent wedding clothes and make reservations at the Hendry Hotel (if you had enough money!) In just one year, the Angola took advantage of $250,000!

Just as I was thinking about all this, a friend of mine, Ann Richardson Gullberg, sent me a story of her own wedding dress. She got married in June 1984. Recently, she met a young girl, Emma, whom she befriended with handmade jewelry and beads.

They go through all sorts of treasures in the garage and then sent Ann some of her own clothing designs. Emma loves designing dresses, so Ann asked Emma if she would like her dress. Ann wonders what to do with it or who to pass it on to since she has boys. Emma was thrilled to have the dress. Before Ann offered it to her, she carefully took it out of the storage box to try it out. She was wonderfully surprised and happy that he was still healthy. She sent me a photo, then she sent me another photo from her wedding day with her handsome husband, Jan. They met in Saudi Arabia.

I love Ann’s generous spirit. She doesn’t know what Emma will do with the dress, though she secretly hopes she will wear it as her own one day.

It’s mid-June roses on the trellis. It’s also the time for weddings, tussie-mussies (if you’re lucky enough to know someone to make you one) and well, I imagine a little more love!
