On their home course, the men’s golf team won the Valpo Fall Invitational in dominant fashion. The team posted its best 54-hole score since 2014 and finished 18 full strokes ahead of second-placed Loyola.
This victory means a lot to us, said head coach David Gring. The last two years we lost our home tournament in one fell swoop. For the guys, playing hard in front of family, friends, alumni and everyone else at Sand Creek meant a lot.
The Beacons were led by sophomore star Anthony Delisanti who finished as an individual medalist in the 99-man field. Senior Caleb VanArragon finished just one stroke behind Delisanti to claim the top two spots for Valpo. Friendly competition between teammates drives constant improvement.
We improve by playing each other all the time,” Delisanti said. We push ourselves every day in practice.
Since joining the team last fall, Delisanti has been on fire. His latest performance earned him the third-best 54-hole score in program history. It was also his third individual medal since joining Valpo.
Anthony has been very stable since the first tournament of his career at Valpo, Gring said. He’s won three of the last six tournaments he’s played in and that’s really impressive. He works really hard in training and is well prepared.
Although Delisanti stood out from the rest, the victory came from strong performances by the whole team. In the 17-team, 99-player invitational, Valpo’s five starting players finished in the top 13. The team led the tournament in three different categories earning the highest score by 4, a score by 5 and a total of birdies.
Five of the eight players are returning from last year. Another year of leadership from four-year-old starter Caleb VanArragon has proven particularly beneficial for Valpo. Not only with his skills on the course, but also at the clubhouse, he plays a valuable role for the team.
As captain, Caleb hosts a pre-tournament player meeting and he’s become a true leader, Gring said. Sharing experiences completes what we talk about as coaches.
The arrival of senior transfer Padaric Sim from Oregon also adds depth to the program and adds to the slew of veteran voices.
Having Padaric in the squad now is like having another assistant coach because of his experience, Delisanti said. He has spent so much time in college golf and brings a lot to the team.
With a strong start to the season and an improved roster from last season, Valpo has big aspirations for the Missouri Valley Conference and potentially even national tournaments. Despite the initial success, the team continues to take nothing for granted and is solely focused on the next tournament.
We have this quiet confidence in every tournament, Gring said. We want to be careful with expectations because we know the only thing we can control is being well prepared.
