eBay is teaming up with clothing resale, sanitizing and repair experts ACS to expand the second-hand supply of online marketplaces and help reduce waste in the fashion industry.
The move follows new research from eBay that reveals a growing resale economy in the UK, as more cost-conscious and environmentally conscious consumers choose to buy and sell second-hand rather than new. Almost nine in 10 (87%) UK adults surveyed said they had bought a second-hand item in the last twelve months, while more than six in 10 (63%) said they had sold a second-hand item. This trend is translating into sales so far, with eBay reporting one second-hand fashion sale every second so far in 2022.
The partnership will help more brands and retailers quickly create and grow resale deals, while giving eBay UK’s more than 20 million customers more choice in second-hand goods. The first retail partner to launch on the ACS eBay store is Monsoon, with other big name names to follow.
ACS cleans, disinfects and repairs used items, making them ready for resale, as well as arranging the logistics of listing and delivering items. The eBay platform will connect its millions of buyers worldwide with this stock.
The partnership aims to capitalize on the growing shift to the occasion, which is driven by the rising cost of living and greater concern for our impact on the environment. eBay UK surveyed UK adults about their experiences and motivations for second-hand shopping. Their top reasons were: getting a better deal or finding a bargain (32%), cutting expenses and the rising cost of living (both 31%), followed by a desire to be more sustainable ( 26%%).
As the resale economy becomes more mainstream and the scale and range of items on offer increase, consumers are increasingly likely to consider used over new. One in four UK adults (25%) surveyed said a wider range of second-hand items now available to buy was one of the main reasons they make a second-hand purchase.
However, research has found that barriers exist when it comes to used items becoming mainstream. Concerns about hygiene (51%), safety of second-hand products (35%), quality issues (28%) and counterfeit or non-genuine products (27%) are the main reasons for avoiding second-hand goods.
The new partnership aims to tackle some of these misconceptions about the second-hand market, with strict quality controls, the latest sanitizing technology and high repair standards helping to improve trust between buyers and encourage more buyers to choose second-hand items.
Commenting on the study, Murray Lambell, UK Vice President of eBay, said: Our economy and our environment urgently need fixing. If we want our businesses to be here 20 or 100 years from now, we need to move away from our fixation on overconsumption and instead brand ourselves on circularity. There is huge business value in supporting the resale economy and retailers who are the first to make the switch and invest will benefit the most in the long run.
Commenting on the partnership, Lucy Peacock, Head of Preloved at eBay UK, adds: In the fashion industry, we know there is a greater need to build a sustainable future. Since 1995, eBay has been extending product lifecycles, whether through consumer-to-consumer resale or our Imperfects hub, so it’s fantastic to partner with ACS, who are at the fore- keeps activating the fashion circular economy.
Combining eBay’s reach with conscious customers and ACS’s expertise in apparel repair, resale and recycling will help reduce waste in the fashion industry and present a way more enjoyable to shop that benefits both people’s wallets and the planet.
Andrew Rough, President and CEO of ACS Clothing, said: “The rise in second-hand clothing sales is undoubtedly a reaction to growing consumer awareness of sustainability in fashion as well as the rising cost of living and the pressure this puts on spending. eBay is famous for its extensive second-hand clothing offering, and this evolving resale partnership with ACS will allow them to grow that offering further.
“As the largest back-end logistics provider of resale clothing in the UK, ACS’s resale offering extends the life of garments to minimize waste and keep current garments in circulation for longer. We take care of textile repairs, eco-friendly cleaning, quality control and more to put those pre-loved items back on the shelf.
“This partnership with eBay is not only significant news for the development of circular fashion, we process over six million items in our 200,000 square foot fashion hub each year, but it is a stepping stone for ACS as it will allow us to open our first brand-approved storefront.
“We want to rethink the future of fashion by providing a solution to the industry’s sustainability crisis. We seek to transform the fashion industry from the outdated take-make-throw model to a circular fashion solution that extends the life of existing textiles and diverts clothing from landfills. With eBay, we know it’s possible.
This is eBay’s latest move to stop fashion items going to landfill, building on the launch of eBay’s Imperfects Hub earlier this year – giving buyers the chance to get clothes, shoes and accessories that are considered new with defects but cannot be sold. at full price – and Brand Outlet, eBay’s dedicated destination for end-of-season stock purchases with up to 70% off.
