King Charles III knows the power of a durable shoe – after all, the royal has kept the same pair in his rotation for over 50 years.
The royal – who will be officially crowned King of the UK in a ceremony on Saturday – revealed in 2018 that he has kept the same pair of shoes in his wardrobe since 1971: a pair of mahogany leather brogues, in which he was seen as early as 1971 during a visit to Jesus College in Oxford, England.
The style is popular in the King’s rotation, worn from formal events to everyday occasions – such as the Royal Family’s 2023 Easter service.

“I’ve always believed in trying to keep as many clothes and shoes as possible for as long as possible – some date back to 1971 and a jacket to 1969! – through patches and repairs, and in that way, I tend to be fashionable once every 25 years,” the royal told the Australian Financial Review in April 2018, as indicated in the Daily mail.

The cause, he explained at the time, was due to efforts to dress more sustainably. Especially as fast fashion grows in popularity and contributes to clothing waste, Charles stressed the importance of circular clothing.
Indeed, sustainability is a primary value for the royal, who has even offer femininity to fashion designer Stella McCartney – who has made sustainability and the use of eco-friendly materials a priority for her eponymous brand since its inception in 2001 – in February 2023.

“It’s extraordinary how fashions change,” Charles said in the same 2018 interview, “and, speaking as someone who, on the whole, hates throwing things away without finding another use for them or fixing them, I couldn’t be more delighted if, finally, there is a growing awareness of the urgent need to get out of the ‘throwaway society’ and move towards a ‘more circular economy’.
Similar shoes in King Charles III’s wardrobe – seen during his recent appearances with Queen Consort Camilla – are often associated with matching blazers and pants in hues such as blue, gray and black. The royal frequently wears classic leather oxfords and loafers in neutral hues for various occasions, sometimes swapping for lighter linen pairs on the beach.
