Ukiah High relaunches student fashion show on Friday – The Ukiah Daily Journal
Ukiah High School’s fashion and merchandising program has relaunched its fashion show, and many student designs will be on display this Friday.
Teacher Katrena Dursteler said the show hadn’t taken place in several years and was being brought back this year in part because of renewed interest in classes.
When Dursteler started at Ukiah High five years ago, she said there weren’t enough students in the fashion program to support hosting such a show, but interest has since skyrocketed, and there are now “190 students enrolled in the program next year”.
This week’s show will first feature student-created fashion using more ‘conventional’ materials, then the second half will feature ‘upcycling’, or creating new clothes using repurposed used clothing. , which are often items that students have obtained at thrift stores.
For example, Dursteler said senior Helena Rooney made a skirt out of a dozen “saved” men’s ties, while fellow senior CJ Raugewitz made many different garments, such as pants and shirts, using pieces of different pairs of jeans.
Other items include an Ayla Schuette bag made from a denim skirt and an apron that Darby Lea also made from a denim skirt.
These items will be featured at Friday’s show, which will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 26 at the school, located at 1000 Low Gap Road. Admission will be $5 for adults and $3 for students.
In addition to the fashion show, Dursteler said certain items, such as bags, will be available for purchase.
