4 temples in Nagpur enforce dress code as Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangha calls for vastra samhita

In an unprecedented move, the Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangha (MMM) has issued a clarion call to enforce the ‘vastra samhita’ or dress code in temples across the state.

Following this decision, at least four temples in Nagpur implemented the dress code. This includes Gopalkrishna Temple in Dhantoli, Sankatmochan Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple in Saoner, Brihaspati Temple and Durgamata Temple. Several other popular shrines in the district are cautious and not rushing to make a decision in this regard.

Posters have appeared at temple entrances urging worshipers to be careful about how they dress when visiting shrines. To maintain the sanctity of the temples, worshipers were reportedly asked to wear decent clothing and avoid “short” and “revealing” outfits.

Sunil Ghanwat, chief coordinator of MMM, which is an association of temples in the state, said, “At a meeting held in Jalgaon in February, we took the decision to develop a dress code for the temples. We will also request Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to implement the same in government-controlled temples across Maharashtra.

Explaining the reason for the dress code, an MMM official said, “Places of worship have their own sacredness. Individuals come here in faith to offer prayers. What’s wrong with telling people to wear decent clothes?

“Some rules and regulations already exist in several temples and other religious places,” he added.

Earlier this month, a similar dress code was imposed at the famous Tuljapur temple in Osmanabad, sparking protests and criticism that eventually led to the restrictions being lifted.
