How Eddie Izzards dresses up to kill has given me hope as a non-genre comic book

The first time I took a friend to one of the few microphones open for new comics in Philadelphia, around 2001, she was confused.

"So," she asked afterward, as we crossed the hall of the dilapidated chain motel which had the dubious honor of hosting the comedy club, "how did you get exactly got the bill from the Angry Men Show? "

I joked that surely angry butch lesbians are close enough to qualify.

But the demographic tone and more particularly the tone had been so constant, it took me almost a week and a lot of swear words on my father's grave to convince her that no, it had been just one night random open mic.

Except it wasn't really random. Almost everywhere I tried to perform, it seemed like the same show was going on.

Sometimes they included a comic book that opened each set with, "I went car park with my girlfriend and she said, "Oh, I'm not that kind of girl," so I pulled out my knife and said, "Yes, you are." "

Another guy on the scene at the time thought that the most hilarious thing a comic book could do on stage was to work a woman. Sometimes it was in the very original premise of imitating the embarrassing behavior of a dog, but I also remember that he had done it in the middle of a little about flossing.

I did a show to bring to an Italian restaurant in South Philly. While 15 of my most generous friends ate all the pasta they could afford after coughing the $ 25 cover charge, the comic book that played before me described the unpleasant smell of her girlfriend's vagina . In detail. For 12 full minutes.

It seemed so unclear on the anatomy of cisgender women that a person at our table asked, "Man, are you sure you're talking about her vagina?"

Her answer "What do you really know about vaginas?" was particularly hilarious as he addressed almost the entire organizing committee of the Philadelphia Dyke March. We were all recently out, young, excited, and having sex with all the queer people in the Tri-State area. We were the main authorities in Philadelphia on the smell of women's vaginas.

It was all pretty dark, but I have an unfortunate deep biological optimism, so I tried to see it as a comedy training camp and decided to keep fighting for my time on stage.

One night in an open mic, I started my set with, I need you to do me a favor and ignore all the physical signals and trust me when I say I am a adult woman and not a 12 year old boy.

A drunk comic shouted, "You're not a 12-year-old boy, you're a big, ugly, fat dyke, and I said: You're just sad, I'm not a boy." 12 years. You and the Catholic priests, both.

I know now (and, if I'm being honest, I probably knew it at the time) that calling someone a pedophile when he just called you ugly is an overreaction. Later, the angry cartoon chased me around the parking lot, shouting and brandishing a broken beer bottle.

As I zigzagged around in cars and hid behind a dumpster, I realized that my acting career (especially when it was associated with my smart mouth) was quickly becoming a health hazard. I needed to adopt a training program to increase my sprint speed and endurance, hire private security or find better sites. That night, I started a new list in my comedy notebook: Other places to play that might be weird but that won't lead to my death.

And so I started what has become my acting career, telling jokes between drag queens at LGBT pride events, hosting shows in free trade cafes, setting the scene for polyamorous nerd conventions and livening up everything from costly fundraisers to group acupuncture workshops and to cattle auctions.

Eddie Izzard in Dress to kill

A few months later, my best friend informed me that I had to go to her house right away to watch something very, very important. I yawned as she inserted the homemade VHS tape into the VCR. I had seen the words Dress to kill hand written on the spine and thought it was a James Bond movie or a foreign language movie that I would not be able to follow.

But while the band was spinning, I realized she was right. It was important. I was immediately pierced by Eddie Izzard, a gorgeous and stupid British standup comedian. He wore full makeup and a strange bowl-cut wig. His outfit was what Eddie Izzard's official website describes as "a wraparound Chinese style shirt, heels, shiny pants, blue nail polish" and he ran on stage, watched the audience , shrugged and said,, as well as.

He continued to describe himself as a male tomboy, to whom I certainly referred as a female (female) tomboy. But what seemed almost futuristic was how he talked about himself; it was funny without self-deprecating, which at the time seemed to be the only authorized way for a woman (or in this case, a man wearing what was apparently women's clothing) to make jokes related to appearance. Instead of noting presumed imperfections in the body or presentation, he spoke of the function of his appearance, observing that the army should use transvestite soldiers: they miss a huge opportunity here, because we all know the One of the main elements of the attack is the element of surprise. So what could be more surprising than the 1st Battalion Transvestite Brigade?

He then jumped into a discussion of mass murderers, squirrels, the lie of childhood, the lack of fundamentalism in the Church of England, rabbits at the crucifixion, chiropractors, the Heimlich maneuver and history. So much history. And when he talked about himself or his own sex life, it made you laugh ("She consulted the United Nations Security Council on my virginity") instead of giving you goosebumps.

When Izzard came to Philadelphia the following year, my best friend and I bought tickets to see him every five nights, balancing our budgets by existing on one-day ramen and street pretzels for the next six weeks. We laughed a lot about the shows, but they were more than entertainment for me. Each evening we got up early and watched each face as the crowd poured in, smiling at the prospect of so many people wanting to hear a smart comedy that was really something substantial, rather than the blow jobs and the bad smell of vaginas.

The frustrations and, in some cases, the real physical danger that defined my acting career so far were not only that I was a big ugly and fat dike in a room full of men who used comedy as an excuse to get drunk and really say nasty things about their ex-wives. What seemed hopeless was the possibility of developing material beyond these pieces. See Izzard somehow gave me permission to write a comedy about death, regret, ridicule of the rigid genre binary and why lesbians don't take exams.

Part of this week's balm (and watch Dress to kill to repeat over the next 12 months) saw a very successful non-genre comic on stage in stark contrast to my daily experience of being a non-successful genre comic on stage. But what was even more encouraging and what gave me hope to continue practicing, writing and improving, was seeing that Eddie Izzard had an audience, and that meant that 39; there could very well be an audience for me too.
