John Walter Inge (March 31, 1839 – January 9, 1919) was an English first-class cricketer and British army officer.

He was born in March 1839 in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, the son of Charles Inge. He was first educated at Rossall School until 1853,^[1] before going to Charterhouse School from 185356.^[2] After completing his training, Inge was appointed a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery in the British Army in June 1860.^[3] Inge appeared in first class cricket for the Gentlemen of Kent in August 1863 against the Gentlemen of Marylebone Cricket Club in Canterbury.^[4] Twice hitting in the game, he got four runs in the first innings of Gentlemen of Kent, while was fired for nine runs in the second innings by George Milman.^[5]

Inge was promoted to captain in November 1872,^[6] with him later served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 187880, in which he was decorated.^[1] He was promoted to major in February 1881,^[7] before reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in September 1887.^[8] After completing a lieutenant colonel regiment for five years, he was withdrawn from active duty in September 1892.^[9] Inge died at Hollywell Lodge in Oxford in January 1919.^[10] His brothers Francis and William both played top-notch cricket, as did his great-nephew Will Inge.
