Richmond student's crochet dress wins upcycle design competition
KPU Richmond's Wilson School of Design challenged students to use recycled textiles and found objects.
A dress crocheted from scrap fabric to symbolize the web of life is the winning design in an annual upcycling competition held at KPU's Wilson School of Design.
Clara Devina, a third-year fashion design and technology student, was recently named the winner of the 2024 Recycled Design Competition, winning a $2,000 prize.
“I always thought sustainability in fashion was important. When I joined KPU’s Wilson School of Design, my goal was to learn more about how to make them work in today’s circular economy,” said Devina.
The dress is Devina's interpretation of this year's pageant theme, Gaia, which was “inspired by scientist James Lovelock's theory that all living organisms are connected and form synergistic, self-regulating systems,” it reads in a KPU press release.
Weaving and crochet techniques highlighted the idea of connectivity and Devina chose to use yarn to represent the idea that “everything in nature starts small”.
“It's just one part, but I can learn something from it. It represents the whole world: plants grow from a single seed,” she said.
“I wanted to do it like a rag fabric, where the colors and materials weren't very nice, but when you combine them, they look beautiful.”
This year's competition, hosted by the Wilson School of Design in partnership with local textile recycling initiative Our Social Fabrice, challenged students to create a three-dimensional design using recycled textiles and found objects to incorporate environmental and social responsibility in their work.
The winning designs were chosen via online voting.
Second place with a $1,500 prize was a death-inspired dress designed by students Destiny Lang, Denanae Tingala and Olivia Wong, while Heidi Wilson came third and won $1,000 with a lace-up jacket depicting the beauty of Gaia.
The winner of the People's Choice Award and $500 prize was Sophie MacFarlane, who designed a dress to raise awareness of microplastic fiber waste.
