Shades Valley High School senior designs and sews prom dress
IRONDALE, Ala. (WBRC) – Singer, actress and writer are just a few words that describe a Shades Valley High School senior. Now she can also add dress designer to her resume.
Layla Hildreth has always been creative. But this prom season, she made her fairytale dreams come true by designing and sewing her own prom dress inspired by one of her favorite Disney princesses, Princess Tiana.
It's more than just the dress, Hildreth said. She was a big star in her moments; she was very inspiring.
Hildreth had been sewing by hand for a long time. She started sewing seriously with a machine last year after receiving one.
I started making bags and jackets, and then I got to prom season and I was like, 'I'm going to make myself a prom dress,'” Hildreth said.
Hildreth was inspired by Princess Tiana's work ethic and how she never lost sight of her dreams.
The way she carried herself, the way she never gave up, and I feel like the dress really shows how great she is, she said.
Hildreth's sister, Raven, is one of the most important people in her life. She says she always encourages him to reach for the stars.
She is definitely my inspiration, she said. Every time I write a story, or something I have to do about my model, it's always her.
I just hope she knows that whatever she wants to do, we, me, the rest of our family, are going to support her 100 percent, Raven Hildreth said.
Layla Hildreth wants to encourage people with big dreams like her to pursue those dreams.
Don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't do, because there were many times where people were like, oh, you want to do that? and I was like yeah, this is what I'm going to do and I'm going to make it happen, she said.
After putting so much effort into achieving her dreams, she feels like she has become a princess in her own right.
Hildreth will attend Georgia State University in the fall. She plans to continue her creative activities there.
