Italian prosecutors investigate the supply chain of a dozen more fashion brands
Milan prosecutors are investigating the supply chains of a dozen other fashion brands, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters, after a unit of France's LVMH group in Italy was placed into administration in as part of an investigation into worker exploitation.
A Milan court on Monday appointed a commissioner to run an LVMH-owned maker of Dior-branded handbags after an investigation into four of its suppliers. based near the Italian fashion capital, discovered illegal working conditions for its staff.
On-site inspections and checks of electricity consumption data led prosecutors to allege that workers were employed for extended hours, often working at night and on holidays. Some staff slept where they worked, did not have regular contracts and some had immigrated to Italy illegally.
This is the third decision of this type issued this year by the Milan court responsible for preventive measures, which in April took similar measures against a company owned by Giorgio Armani due to accusations that which the fashion group would not have properly monitored its suppliers. The Armani Group said at the time that it had always sought to minimize abuses in the supply chain.
LVMH declined to comment on the court's decision on Monday.
Milan prosecutors and Italian police are investigating other small manufacturers that supply a dozen other brands, the source said, declining to provide further details because the information is confidential.
The appointment of a special commissioner aims to give fashion brands time to resolve issues in their supply chain while continuing to operate.
Neither LVMH nor Armani are under investigation, while suppliers under investigation face accusations of worker exploitation, copies of court rulings seen by Reuters showed.
