I love themes. This cannot be easy to do.

It's funny, that's where your creativity and perversity come in. You do the theme for five completely disconnected shows. Maybe it's something really stupid. I think people still read the stories, but I don't think they're always necessarily interested, and the theme helps things. You have to seduce them into reading something or someone. If they don't know who makes Mugler now, who do you put Mugler with to get people interested? Dior and Chanel are friends in the water, everyone is here for that. There are also people that I really like and want people to read about. Nicolas Di Felice, I think, is just incredible.

He is happy to talk to you about his collection or to find out what interests you. It's a good interview. Do you think designers talk better or worse about their work?

Adorable, really. Designers have improved a lot by being interviewed. There were designers I loved who literally couldn't string three words together about their collection, which was always a shame because you could tell they weren't going to be in the conversation for very long. I think they need to talk to you about the collections. They need to know what you think, and they formulate their thoughts about what they did as you talk to them. It's a skill to be so adaptable that when they listen to you, they prepare: Yeah, that's what I was doing. Yeah, that was the book. Yeah, that was the movie. Because an assistant was doing it elsewhere, so now you've given them that intellectual gloss, without trying to sound arrogant or anything. This is why your opinions are really valuable to the designer.

What do you think about designers just not giving interviews? Is it more common today than then?

At first I was doing it for television, so it was new and people were quite fascinated. I think the designers thought it was something they had to do because they saw a new audience for it. Even [Claude] Montana and [Yves] Saint Laurent, they would be propped up in front of a camera by a handler, or Pierre Berg, and they would be of no use, but they would do it. I think at that point PR got in the middle and everything became super controlled. And then Tom Ford came along, and then KCD would be like just four questions. It went from a 45-minute behind-the-scenes interview, of which you used 15 seconds in your final article, to four questions and a 45-minute wait. It was all Tom, he absolutely started it. Then people started doing it for nameless people too. You would be like I don't even have four questions to ask this person. I won't say any names, but you can guess. Do I care? This corresponds to my progress in life. I used to be talkative and now I'm like, don't you want to talk? I'm happy to go have a cocktail somewhere.
