The wonderful Michael Mosley summed up the genius and stubbornness of British men

This time last week, I was at a favorite hotel on Turkey's Mediterranean coast when a staff member told us there was an extreme heat warning for the next few days. People have been advised to stay indoors between 11am and 4pm to avoid temperatures rising above 40 degrees. Spark lots of merriment from the British guests at breakfast. Stop! We were there from Raining UK since November. We desperately needed some sunshine.

The great Billy Connolly once said: There are two seasons in Scotland: June and winter. That's how it felt in 2024, although even the fiery month of June required a coat and, on a cold night, the heating came on. Extreme heat? Go ahead, we cried.

And then I climbed the steep hill toward the village and the heat felt like skin wrapping around me, seeping into my lungs. It was strangely oppressive. My heart was pounding and, trembling, I returned to my room where I drank a lot of cool water. A combination of sunbathing in the pool and resting in the shade seemed to bring me back to a normal temperature, but I still got scared.

What I didn't know was that, 250 miles away, along the coast and a short walk out to sea to the Greek island of Symi, Dr. Michael Mosley was embarking on a walk in this oppressive heat which would end tragically with the discovery of his body. not far from a beach cafe where he could have been saved.

There was something quintessentially English Abroad about the figure Michael depicted on CCTV, sheltering under his purple umbrella. As someone married to this nervous and determined breed, I knew he wouldn't want to stop for directions when he seemed to be going down the wrong path. Hell, no. He would like to continue and get to where he needed to be. What was particularly poignant for fans of the wonderfully effervescent TV doctor was knowing that he was acting on his own advice. Staying active, getting his heart rate up, increasing his step count instead of taking the boat back to where he was staying with his beloved wife Clare.

Michael Mosley has been an inspiration to those of us in the danger zone of type 2 diabetes, a disease he successfully reversed on his own. He has become evangelical about the benefits of intermittent fasting. His 5:2 diet is a bible for fat lazy people and, like a gentle vicar coaxing you into heaven, he insisted that a camel could fit through the eye of a needle if you ate good carbs.

He never passed judgment on those who struggled with their weight, nor took advantage of them as often happens. I loved his often hilarious series on Channel 4 Michael Mosley: the secrets of your great store in which he cast an expert eye on a family's weekly food consumption. In one case, the supermarket cart was almost full of the husband's cola bottles. The man was clearly seriously addicted and obese, but Michael remained resolutely cheerful, encouraging a few behavioral adjustments here and there, reveling in the slightest sign of progress rather than inducing shame and self-loathing.

Many tributes have rightly been paid to his work as an educator; he had the rare gift of being perfectly relaxed on television, coming across as the lovable guy he was. He was the David Attenborough of physiology. Like the great naturalist, Michael Mosley was a child prodigy, blessed with boundless curiosity, even swallowing a tapeworm just to see what would happen.

It is almost too sad to bear that, even in his final moments, he observed the effects of heat stroke with keen interest, saving them to pass on as a cautionary tale to his viewers and readers. What a loss he is, but I hope it will comfort Clare and her children to know that their extraordinarily wise and kind husband and father was adored by millions of strangers. We can still hear His voice in our heads on days when willpower is weak.

Michael Mosley was a tonic for the nation's health: just what the doctor ordered.
