Age and dress code enforced at two local restaurants to maintain mature clientele
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Two St. Louis area restaurants are getting unconventional with the rules for entering their establishments.
Typically, the age to enter your first bar is 21, but one restaurant in north St. Louis County has you waiting even longer for dinner.
Bliss Restaurant owner Marvin Pate says his strict policy for women 30 and older and men 35 and older is a way to create safe spaces for mature crowds.

The Pates Rules attracted national attention. He says all he wanted to do was create a safe dining experience for mature adults. Guests who appear to be under the age of 30 must show their ID to the Bliss hostess or a St. Louis County police officer after 7 p.m. Pate says that as a result, Bliss has become popular among customers for its expanded and sophisticated space. They teach people how to dress when you want to come to dinner and come naturally like you should, Pate said.
Unfortunately, we have to turn people away because of the dress code, said Dallas Holland, owner of Beyond Sweets. I really want the mature crowd. We want this to be your place, we just want you to dress properly. We want everyone to come in and feel comfortable.
Holland says Beyond Sweets' dress code is casual and upscale. No tank tops, no flip flops and no explicit language on clothing. If you're in violation, Holland says they'll refuse to seat you.
When you allow certain dress codes, it takes a different type of person and we're just trying to avoid that type of crowd, Holland said.
Pate and Holland hope other restaurants will establish restrictions like theirs. They say it's not about excluding anyone, but about controlling who and what enters their businesses.
