Princess Diana's dresses and personal letters up for auction in Beverly Hills

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (KABC) — Nearly 27 years after Princess Diana's death, a massive auction is taking place in Beverly Hills to give fans a chance to own a piece of British royal history.

Julien's Auctions organizes “The elegance of Princess Diana & A royal collection” starting Wednesday morning at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. This is the largest auction of Diana's personal items since her death in 1997.

Among the premium items up for auction:

1987 Victor Edelstein magenta silk and lace evening dress. Worn on Diana twice in 1987 and estimated between $200,000 and $400,000.

Catherine Walker Pink Floral Dress The Chelsea Design Company. A pink floral silk shirt dress designed by Catherine Walker that Diana was photographed wearing on at least two occasions, in 1991 and 1992. It is estimated at $100,000 to $200,000.

Catherine Walker black velvet evening dress This dress designed by Catherine Walker was not worn in public. It is expected to fetch between $100,000 and $200,000.

For Diana fans on a budget, items such as handbags, shoes and personal letters would cost less than $5,000.

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit Muscular Dystrophy UK.

The auction includes other miscellaneous items belonging to British royalty, such as a cotton nightgown that belonged to Queen Victoria and a cotton dress that belonged to Wallis Simpson, the American socialite whose marriage to King Edward VIII led to his abdication.

Just weeks before her death, she auctioned off 79 of her own dresses, raising millions for the charities she supported. Some of the items she originally sold at Christie's New York auction on June 25, 1997 are now being offered at this week's Julien event.
