The launch of the European Space Agency's brand new Ariane 6 rocket is getting closer and closer. Last week, technicians at ESA's Kourou Spaceport in French Guiana conducted a full dress rehearsal of the rocket, which was fully fuelled.
The rocket carried around 180 tonnes of propellant and it was all later dumped following the tests which included a full countdown and final checks of the many systems other than the final launch.
“The first actual launch of the massive rocket is currently scheduled for July 9 and everything is going according to plan,” said Josef Aschbacher, Director General of ESA.
The wet dress rehearsal is the very last step before launch, said Guy Pilchen, Ariane 6 launcher project manager at ESA. The test, a standard practice for new launch vehicles, allows engineers to fine-tune the delicate operations required up to liftoff, using the rockets' actual flight hardware and software for the first time, he added.
It was anticipated that the data collected during the wet dress rehearsal would take at least a week to analyze in its entirety. Today (June 26), analysis of test data will be completed and final adjustment of the rocket systems before launch.
However, it is undeniable that the very late arrival of the rocket put a strain on the requirements of ESA's science and government missions. The rocket is more than a year behind schedule and ESA's overall schedules have not been helped by the unavailability of ESA's Vega-C rocket, which suffered a failure around 18 years ago. months and probably won't be available until the end of this year.
