Capital Region artist to unveil paper dress at Saratoga Race Course opening

It's hard to believe, but the track season opener at Saratoga Race Course is only two weeks away. A Capital Region artist and designer is working on something special for opening day and waiting to see how it will be displayed.

“I just think people should see something that brightens their day.”

Brightening things up has become something of a mantra for Susan Taylor, and the material she uses to brighten up the world around her is paper. “I've made paper dresses out of braille paper, Lily Pulitzer shopping bags, so anything that catches my eye when I imagine something,” Taylor said. It's true. Susan Taylor makes these beautiful wearable dresses out of paper. It’s a way to channel her creativity with the sewing skills she learned as a child.

“Each dress has a different theme, a different piece to focus on,” Taylor said.

She has been making them for eight years, at night and on weekends, outside of her “real job”. They are used as in-store displays and have also been worn for charitable purposes.

So she had an idea: make one to wear on the opening day of the summer competition at Saratoga Race Course. “I think it's just the artist in me saying, why not create something that can be enjoyed for a variety of reasons. »

That's what brought her to CBS 6 morning anchor Lara Bryn. A mutual friend connected them, and Lara agreed to be Susan's real-life model. She'll be wearing Susan's next creation on opening day at the racetrack.
