Grand Rapids Fashion Student Featured in Vogue
Sammy Baker just graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design and says he's obsessed with fashion.
GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan. A fashion student from Grand Rapids was recently featured in Vogue. He has a different take on what looks trendy, using fashion to unleash his inner creature.
Sammy Baker just graduated Savannah College of Art and Design and says he is obsessed with fashion.
I really fell in love with how it is a very strong and personal form of visual communication, Baker said.
He was born in Lansing but grew up in the Furniture City. An area that he believes only furthered his love for fashion.
Grand Rapids is home to a lot of people who really like to know how to be themselves and that's certainly reflected in fashion, Baker said. Fashion that tells people who you are and how you feel.
Each year, SCAD students have 10 weeks to complete a collection of five looks for the school's annual fashion show.
Their work is then presented in Vogue Runway Online.
It was really special. It was really great.
Using mostly recycled materials and techniques that can take several hours, Baker says that with fashion you can be whoever you want.
He said: “It's all about trying to manifest the individual creature or monster that you see yourself as being, adding: I think some people want to be really big. Some people want to have really baggy pants and just like to be these forces of nature walking around in their everyday lives.

They can control their own style. They can do whatever they want, be whoever they want, and show everyone who they are through their clothes.
Baker plans to return to SCAD in the fall for a master's degree in fabric development and manipulation. He said he hoped for a future as an artist.
