As with the previous sale, this exhibition is also a foray into the history of 20th-century fashion. Take for example the vast collection of Yohji Yamamoto clothes from the 1980s, from flowing white tunics to black-tie suit jackets worn with shorts. It's unclear whether the artist formerly known as Reginald Dwight has perfected his knitting techniques yet.

Perhaps more than any other male artist in recent years, Sir Elton’s relationship with fashion has been as central to his identity as his music. Sure, there were the standout pieces of the ’70s and ’80s, the feathered and Minnie Mouse-eared stage costumes (and the dress, for that matter), but this and the Christie’s collection show Sir Elton’s curatorial eye at certain periods, his patronage of Japanese and Belgian designers in the ’80s and ’90s when those fashion sectors were making waves, and the glorious meeting of Gianni Versace and Sir Elton in the ’90s. Versace’s take-no-prisoners approach to playful menswear, in keeping with Sir Elton’s more-is-more ethos.

Of course, Sir Elton's outfit isn't for everyone, but if you're tempted by the auction or just curious to embrace your inner peacock, a loudly patterned shirt is a good place to start. Or maybe a bold bomber jacket; looks pretty cool on an older guy, when you'd expect him to wear a single-breasted blazer, and can be dressed up with a shirt underneath too.
