Thunder Bay teen's duct tape prom dress makes finals in international pageant

Prom is known for its glitz and glamour, puffy gowns and the best evening wear possible.

But prom dress Monica Walsh is a little unconventional: It's made of duct tape.

She is one of five finalists in the Duck Tape Stuck at Prom scholarship competition, an international competition.

The competition challenges students to make and present their own prom outfits made entirely from Duck Tape, offering participants the chance to win scholarships.

Walsh has the opportunity to win a $15,000 post-secondary scholarship and is the only Canadian finalist selected.

Walsh said she is a creative person and enjoys taking on different projects here and there.

She saw the contest online and thought she wouldn't have enough time to make the dress until her mother offered it to her too.

“I thought, ‘That’s a great idea, but I don’t think I have enough time.’ Then I went to bed, slept on it and thought, ‘Yeah, I should make a duct tape dress,’” Walsh said.

From start to finish, it took her 126 hours and 13 rolls of tape to create the dress, inspired by the art of artist Romero Britto.

“It’s part of the bright pop art, with black outlines, a very colorful bottom of the dress, and a white top that separates it, and then it becomes colorful again,” Walsh said.

“I had a few ideas in mind and I wanted to do something different and unique, so I narrowed it down to that one. I had three design ideas, and I didn’t really sketch it out or anything. I had it in my head and I started taping pieces of fabric together.”

Walsh said the response from people has been really good and a lot of people find it very creative.

While it was a creative garment, Walsh said it wasn't the most comfortable because it was made of duct tape and storing it created a unique challenge.

“I tried to hang it up, but the tape started to peel off. So it kind of has its own place on my living room floor to keep all the tape flat.”

The “Duck Tape Stuck at Prom” contest runs through July 10, and Walsh said she needs people to vote for her to have a chance at winning the $15,000 scholarship to the school.

“It would mean a lot to me,” she said. “I mean, it would fund a lot of my education, because $15,000 is a lot.”

People can vote for their favorite creations until July 10.
