As hybrid schedules continue to change workplace norms, casual dress codes and informal workplace etiquette are also becoming more common, according to the results of the survey of June 26from Express Employment Professionals and the Harris Poll.

In the United States, fewer hiring managers believe that having a dress code is important than five years ago. Employers are also less likely to ask employees to put their mobile devices on silent at work, refrain from personal calls or use formal business communications.

In a tight labor market, perks like a more relaxed dress code are simple to implement and can have a significant impact on recruiting and retention, Express Employment International CEO Bill Stoller said in a statement. Some values, however, like punctuality and cleanliness of the workspace, must remain important to respect coworkers’ valuable time and mutual space.

In a survey of 1,007 U.S. hiring managers, less than a third said it was important to follow and adhere to a dress code, compared to 49% and 46%, respectively, who said the same five years ago. Additionally, 7 in 10 said workplace etiquette that wasn’t acceptable three years ago is now.

However, several aspects of workplace culture remain important, such as arriving on time to work and meetings, maintaining a clean workspace and greeting coworkers, hiring managers said.

But as rules evolve or become less formal, employees may struggle to keep up, the report found. Nearly half of hiring managers said it’s been difficult for employees to understand what’s acceptable and what’s not because of recent workplace changes.

Employees expressed similar sentiments. In another survey of 1,002 U.S. adults, a majority said the same aspects of workplace culture remained important, such as arriving on time to work and meetings, keeping workspaces clean and greeting coworkers.

About a third of workers said it was important to have a dress code and follow it, down from nearly two-thirds five years ago. Additionally, 75% of workers agreed that workplace etiquette that wasn’t acceptable three years ago is now.

Overall, most companies seem to be move towards a more casual dress codeaccording to an analysis by Adzuna. While few job postings mention a dress code, the vast majority of those that do tend to list casual or business attire.

Although corporate culture has also become more relaxed, 41% of job seekers say they are not comfortable with their own workaccording to another survey conducted by Express Employment Professionals. More than half of respondents also said it was difficult to know what was acceptable at work due to recent changes, and 86% said they preferred to keep their personal and professional lives separate.

Workplace etiquette and professionalism continue to be popular areas for learning and development opportunitiesespecially for younger workers, Christine Cruzvergara, director of training strategy at Handshake, told HR Dive. In particular, absences and lack of communication about sick leave can be a problem, so time management, organizational skills and communication should be taught from a development and professional development perspective, she said.
