After hijab, Mumbai college bans jeans, T-shirts and 'revealing dresses'

Days after banning the hijab, a Mumbai university has issued a new dress code banning students from wearing ripped jeans, T-shirts and “revealing dresses” on its premises.

In a notice issued by the administration of Chembur Trombay Education Society's NG Acharya and DK Marathe College, students have been asked to wear “formal and decent” attire on campus.

“Students should wear formal and decent attire on campus. They can wear half shirt or full shirt and pants. Girls can wear Indian and western attire. Students should not wear attire revealing any religion or cultural disparity. Jeans, T-shirts, revealing dresses and singlets are not allowed,” a notice posted at the entrance of the college said.

“Hijab, burka, naqab, stoles, caps and badges can be removed by going to the common rooms on the ground floor and only then they can move around the university campus,” the notice dated June 27, 2024, states.

Some students claimed they were unaware of the new dress code and were not allowed to enter the university because they were wearing jeans and T-shirts.

The university had already banned the wearing of hijab, naqab, burqa, stoles, caps and badges on its premises, prompting the students to approach the Bombay High Court. In their petition, nine students said the ban was “arbitrary, unreasonable, contrary to law and perverse”.

A division bench comprising Justices A S Chandurkar and Rajesh Patil, however, said it was not willing to interfere in the decision taken by the collegium and dismissed the petition.

Senior advocate Anil Anturkar, appearing for the college management, said the dress code applied to all students belonging to all religions and castes.

The college asserted that the decision to ban the hijab, naqab and burqa was merely a disciplinary measure regarding the uniform dress code and was not against the Muslim community.
