A New Zealand tourist was fatally run over by a group of suspects who tried to rob her at gunpoint outside a California fashion mall on Tuesday, sparking a frantic police chase that eventually led to the arrest of the three suspected perpetrators.

The victim, Patricia McKay, 68, was outside the Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach near the Barnes & Noble store around 3:30 p.m. with her husband when they were approached by two male suspects who attempted to rob them, the Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD) said.

One of the suspects pulled out a gun and a fight broke out, during which the woman was dragged into the parking lot and several shots were fired, but no one was hit, police said.

The woman was then hit by a third suspect driving a white Toyota Camry. McKay's husband was not injured.

“One of the suspects fled the scene as the vehicle was fleeing and struck the female victim,” NBPD Sgt. Steve Oberon said, according to ABC7. “The male suspect who fled the scene got back into the vehicle, at which point shots were fired from a handgun and the vehicle fled.”

The three suspects then fled in the Camry heading north toward the Los Angeles area, sparking a police pursuit.

Aerial footage from Fox 11 Los Angeles shows a suspect fleeing into a residential area in the South Gate neighborhood after getting out of the car. In the video, a witness can be seen flagging down police to locate him between two houses.

Eventually, the suspect emerges shirtless and walks backward toward police with his hands in the air as the officers have their guns drawn, the video shows. He then kneels and places his hands on his head before police surround him, handcuff him and take him into a police vehicle.

The other two suspects continued to drive the Camry into Los Angeles County where they abandoned the car but were later recovered by police.

Newport Beach Mayor Will O'Neill lashed out at the suspects, calling them “perverts” and denouncing the attack as “stunning and astounding.”

“Newport Beach is a safe community and we’re grieving the loss of someone,” O’Neill said, according to Fox 11. “Frankly, to hell with these guys… they’re thugs. Every community is dealing with this now. We have to do better as a society. We can’t tolerate this.”

The incident took place outside Barnes & Noble at Fashion Island Mall in Newport Beach.

The suspects were identified as Jaden Cunningham, 18, of Lancaster, Malachi Eddward Darnell, 18, of Los Angeles, and Leroyernest Joseph McCrary, 26, of Compton, the NBPD said in a statement. All three were arrested on suspicion of homicide, armed robbery and conspiracy.

A delivery man who witnessed the aftermath of the fatal incident said it was unusual for the area.

“I was walking towards the entrance of the atrium and suddenly I found someone on the ground and someone was performing CPR,” Esamaiel Hamad told Fox 11. “That never happens here, I rarely see a police car here, just security guards.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
