LVMH Appoints Alessandro Valenti as CEO of Givenchy
Last December, designer Matthew Williams announced he was leaving Givenchy after three years as the brand's artistic director. Alessandro Valenti has been named CEO of the French luxury house.
LVMH, the brand's parent company, announced the news internally on Monday, saying the former Louis Vuitton executive would take up his new role immediately, World Health Day Valenti will succeed Renaud de Lesquen, who has been at the head of the company since April 2020.
“His deep knowledge of the luxury industry, including more than 10 years at Louis Vuitton, as well as his retail expertise and managerial skills will be key assets in leading Givenchy to new heights,” said Sidney Toledano, president of Givenchy and advisor to Bernard Arnault, in the statement. “I would also like to thank Renaud for his great achievements within the LVMH group since his arrival in 2012, first at Christian Couture, then at Christian Dior Parfums, and most recently at Givenchy.”
Of course, we'll have to wait and see where de Lesquen goes from here. However, the announcement does mention that he has “decided to take his career in a new direction.” In the meantime, Valenti will step in as a partner to Givenchy's next artistic director, once the brand names one.
As previously mentioned, Williams stepped down at the end of last year. According to the fashion house, the designer left his position with the intention of “devoting himself entirely to the development of his own brand, 1017 ALYX 9SM.” However, there has been no news regarding his replacement.
“Leading the artistic direction of Givenchy was, as I said when I joined in 2020, a lifelong dream,” Williams recalled in a statement at the time of his departure. “Over the course of these three years, I have strived to perpetuate the legacy of Mr. Hubert de Givenchy while bringing my own creative vision.”
Givenchy’s leadership change comes on the heels of two other industry leadership changes. Just yesterday, LVMH rival Richemont announced that Cartier CEO Cyrille Vigneron would be replaced by Louis Ferla, the current head of Vacheron Constantin. Shortly after, the Swiss luxury group revealed that Catherine Rénier would be taking over from Van Cleef & Arpels CEO Nicolas Bos. The changes follow those at TAG Heuer, which named a new CEO earlier this year, and LVMH (again), which named Frédéric Arnault as head of its watch division. And last month, Geoff Hess became Sotheby’s global head of watches.
It's safe to say that the winds of change are definitely blowing in the fashion world.
