Mitch Stewart Named Assistant Coach of Men's Tennis Team

Elon, North Carolina Elon University men's tennis head coach Maciek Sykut has named Mitch Stewart an assistant coach for the program. Stewart most recently served as an assistant coach at the University of Denver and brings Power Five coaching and playing experience to Elon.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Mitch to our coaching staff,” said Sykut. “His wealth of experience, infectious energy and passion for the game will ignite our team and propel our student-athletes to new heights. We look forward to the positive impact he will undoubtedly bring to our program.”

Most recently, Stewart completed his second stint in Denver, spending a year as an assistant coach. The program went 23-1, including a 5-0 mark in the Summit League, and won the Summit League Tournament championship with a convincing 4-0 victory over Drake. Throughout an undefeated regular season, Denver picked up wins over Oregon, Purdue, Wisconsin, Utah, New Mexico and Boise State.

Prior to that, Stewart was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Washington, where he helped the program reach a No. 38 ranking in the ITA with wins over Cal, Utah, Oregon and Stanford.

Stewart also served as an assistant coach in Denver for the 2021-22 season and helped the Pioneers to a 15-7 record and a trip to the Summit League tournament championship. Denver was ranked No. 45 in the ITA national rankings during the season.

During the 2020-21 season, Stewart began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Arizona, helping the program to its first NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in program history. The team also earned its highest national ranking (No. 15) and best Pac-12 finish (second place) in Arizona history.

Stewart graduated from the University of Washington in 2018, where he was a standout player. He was a four-time second-team All Pac-12 selection, never playing below the No. 2 singles line in his career. As a senior, Stewart won the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award for the Northwest Region.
