Fashion Island Mall Robbery Ends in Woman's Death

A New Zealand woman visiting California was killed in a robbery gone wrong at Fashion Island Mall in Newport Beach. Three suspects have been arrested.

NEWPORT BEACH, California – Police have identified the woman killed in an attempted robbery at Fashion Island in Newport Beach Tuesday as a tourist New ZealandPatricia McKay, 68.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the botched robbery, including one who Newport Beach's mayor said “should not have been part of free society” because of his criminal history.

A memorial plaque was erected Wednesday outside the Barnes and Noble where McKay died, with a message reading, “Stop the senseless thefts!”

Following the deadly robbery attempt, police and mall security significantly increased patrols at Fashion Island on Wednesday.

“It's scary, and it's not surprising when they say it's okay to be criminals,” said customer Martha Bayer.

“I actually just bought a stun gun that I'm going to keep in my purse right now because of what just happened,” Terry Buchanan said.

Police say McKay and her husband were outside Barnes and Noble Tuesday afternoon when two men attempted to rob them at gunpoint. There was a struggle, and then a third suspect hit and killed McKay with their getaway car. All three suspects were located and arrested after a multi-county chase that ended in South Gate.

“They're going to hell,” Newport Beach Mayor Will O'Neill said. “They came to our city knowing they were going to commit a crime and a woman died today because of it.”

The suspects have now been identified as Leroyernest McCrary, 26, of ComptonJaden Cunningham, 18, from Lancasterand Malachi Darnell, 18, of Angels.

“As you should know, all three perpetrators were residents of Compton or Los Angeles,” said Newport Beach City Councilmember Lauren Kleiman. “With the immediate prosecution, detention and arrest of all those involved, the message to anyone coming from Los Angeles – or anywhere else – to commit a crime here is that the Newport Beach Police Department will apprehend you.”

McCrary has been arrested several times before. Los Angeles County. According to Los Angeles County Sheriff's DepartmentAccording to inmate records, McCrary has been arrested at least three times, including a felony arrest in Santa Monica in January 2023.

O'Neill addressed McCrary's story in a post on X Wednesday, saying, “The devastating reality is that at least one of the men arrested yesterday for the robbery and murder of a woman in Newport Beach should not have been part of free society. Damn those guys, and damn all the elected officials who knew better and didn't do better.”

News of McKay's death was broadcast in New Zealand. A family spokesman asked New Zealand media to respect their privacy, adding: “No words can express our sadness as we try to cope with the loss of our mother, wife and friend Patricia.”

The victim's husband has been identified by New Zealand media as Doug McKay, a well-known businessman. He was also injured in the attack but is expected to escape unharmed.
