As a memorial service is held at Fashion Island Mall in Newport Beach for a 68-year-old woman who was struck and killed by a car driven by suspected thieves Tuesday, more details have been released about the three suspects.
The men were identified as Leroy McCray, 26, of Compton, Jaden Cunningham, 18, of Lancaster and Malachi Edward Darrell, 18, of Los Angeles.
Police say the trio attempted to rob the woman, Patricia McKay, 68, of New Zealand, and her husband outside the Barnes & Noble store. She was struck and killed by the suspects' car as they left the crime scene on Fashion Island, in the area of Santa Rosa Drive and Newport Center Drive, authorities said.
NBCLA has learned that the older suspect has a criminal history, including robbing a tourist at gunpoint in Santa Monica in 2022.
In Tuesday's incident at the mall, one of the men fired a handgun three times during the robbery, but no one was hit by gunfire, police said.
“To hell with these guys,” Newport Beach Mayor Will O'Neil said. “They came to our city knowing they were going to commit a crime, and a woman died today because of it.”
In response to the incident, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer issued a statement criticizing Governor Gavin Newsom for his tough-on-crime policies, saying Newsom is too busy running for president to be a governor capable of solving California's problems.
