Mahanoy School Board Discusses Dress Code, Phone Policies

CITY OF MAHANOY – The Mahanoy Area School District is considering changes to its dress code and cell phone policies.

Superintendent Joie Green said the changes come after meetings with staff members at the end of the 2023-24 school year.

“In the department groups, these two concepts were brought up by almost every group,” Green said at last week’s school board meeting.

The dress code changes, she said, would ban clothing that “does not provide adequate coverage” and provide clearer guidance on what that means.

“They can wear whatever they want, but it can't be revealing, basically,” she told the council.

Green explained what action would be taken if the policy was violated. She said students could call home to change clothes or borrow clothes from school.

Further information will be distributed to parents once the policy is finalized.

As for cell phones, Green said they can be a major distraction and a safety issue.

“A kid is in trouble in class and he's in the hallway calling his parents,” Green said.

Green told the board that one teacher had a class policy that each student put their phone in a box for the duration of class. One student was late to class and was told to do so, but refused, she said.

“He opened his phone, turned it on, called his parents, put his parents on speakerphone and they started cursing and yelling at the teacher in the middle of class in front of all the students,” Green said. “These are things that happen and should not happen.”

She said, on the other hand, one teacher with a school-age student said he wouldn't feel comfortable if his child didn't have his phone on him.

“We thought about all of this and came up with a plan where the child could carry his cell phone to school, but it would have to be turned off at all times,” Green said.

Board member Dan Lynch, referring to a story about a parent who swore on the phone in class, said he believed “you don't have a duty to be cordial to that person.”

“I encourage you to tell them what they need to hear,” Lynch said. “Tell them you can attend a board meeting and that there are board members who would like to hear what you have to say.”

“You're not here to be a scapegoat, and neither are we,” Lynch said. “I don't want to speak for everyone, but I don't think you have a duty to be cordial.”
