Fashion app Vinted appeals hefty fine for privacy breach

Online platform Vinted to appeal $2.3 million fine for privacy breach received The Lithuanian Data Protection Authority provided incorrect information yesterday, a company spokesperson told Euronews today (July 4).

The platform, on which users can sell second-hand clothes, shoes and bags, was fined after the Lithuanian watchdog found the company had breached the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by failing to give users the right to erase their data.

The investigation was transmitted in Vilnius after French and Polish privacy regulators received local complaints. Under the GDPR, the regulator in the country where the company is headquartered handles the case.

The Lithuanian investigation revealed that the app also used shadow blocking: it banned a user from the platform without their knowledge, after they allegedly violated Vinted’s rules of conduct. This practice prevented users from exercising their privacy rights under the GDPR.

A company spokesperson told Euronews today that Vinted fundamentally disagrees with the fine and will continue to appeal.

Founded in 2008, Vinted operates in 16 markets across Europe, as well as Canada and the United States. It acquired Dutch competitor United Wardrobe and Danish competitor Trendsales in 2024.

The company had already been fined €1.14 million by the Polish Competition and Consumer Authority. The appeal case is still ongoing. The company was also fined €1.5 million by the Italian Competition Authority for violating advertising rules.

The GDPR penalty is the highest ever imposed in Lithuania since EU privacy rules came into force in 2018. The largest GDPR fine ever imposed – 1.2 billion – was imposed by the Irish authority on Meta for transferring user data from the EU to the US without adequate safeguards and for processing children’s data without valid parental consent.
