Sun and Navarro continue their historic run at Wimbledon

In record fashion, Lulu Sun (Texas) and Emma Navarro (Virginia) have both advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Wimbledon tournament. The two rising stars are the first Wimbledon women's singles quarterfinalists from the college ranks since Lisa Raymond (Florida) in 2000.

Sun, one of the tournament’s most talked about stars, continued to turn heads in every match she played at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, advancing from qualifying to the quarterfinals in dominant fashion. Coming into Wimbledon as the No. 123 player in the WTA singles rankings, Sun has since climbed 70 spots to No. 53 in the live WTA rankings, just one spot behind her former Texas teammate Peyton Stearns.

In her latest victory, Sun defeated hometown favorite Emma Raducanu 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 to extend her winning streak at Wimbledon. In just her second appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, Sun achieved many firsts during her eight-game winning streak in London, including winning her first Grand Slam match, beating her first Top 100 player and earning her first Top 10 victory.

Sun helped Texas win the 2021 NCAA national title as a freshman, scoring the deciding game to give the Longhorns a win over Pepperdine. Turning professional the following year in 2022, Sun has now become the first woman to advance from qualifying to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon since 2010, and the first New Zealander to make that long a run at the All England Club in the Open era.

As the only American woman remaining in the women's singles draw, Navarro continued her dominance in 2024, a year in which she won her first WTA Tour singles title, earned her first Billie Jean King Cup selection for Team USA and cracked the top 20 of the WTA singles rankings.

Navarro looked more than comfortable on her way to the quarter-finals, dropping just one set in four matches. By beating world number two and reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16, Navarro has now reached a peak she has never reached at any other Grand Slam tournament before Wimbledon.

Her victory over Gauff comes after her impressive 6-4, 6-1 round-of-32 victory over former world number one and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. Navarro, who has already been named to the U.S. Olympic roster, climbed to a career-high 14th in the live WTA rankings.

During her two seasons at Virginia, Navarro won the 2021 NCAA Singles title, becoming the second player in program history to win the title, joining Danielle Collins who did so in 2014 and 2016. During her freshman year, she was named the ITA National Rookie of the Year, the second consecutive Cavalier to earn that national honor and third overall.

Navarro owns the best single-season winning percentage in Virginia women's tennis history (.961) and earned All-American honors in singles and doubles both years of her collegiate career.
