Tadej Pogacar wins his 3rd Tour de France in a landslide
NICE, France Tadej Pogacar won the Tour de France for the third time and celebrated in style with victory in the final stage of a time trial Sunday ending in Nice.
The 25-year-old Slovenian rider became the first cyclist to win the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in the same year since the late Marco Pantani in 1998.
Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark finished second overall. He also finished the 21st and final stage in second place.
Pogacar won the 34-kilometre time trial on the roads of the French Riviera from Monaco to Nice in 45 minutes and 24 seconds. Vingegaard was a minute and 3 seconds behind, with Belgian Remco Evenepoel third, 1 minute and 14 seconds behind.
In the general classification, Vingegaard finished 6:17 behind Pogacar and Evenepoel was third overall, 9:18 behind Pogacar whose other Tour victories came in 2020 and 2021.
No arrival in Paris due to the Olympic Games
The race did not end in Paris as is often the case due to the Olympic Games. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi called the region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Southern Alps an ideal cycling territory.
From early Sunday morning, supporters camped along Nice's popular Promenade des Anglais to secure a spot that would offer the best view of the cyclists.
Some fans chanted “Remco, Remco” as the time trial specialist sped past them.
They may have been surprised to see Pogacar going full throttle.
After his explosive attack on Friday, Pogacar had said he would not attempt to win Saturday's stage. But the UAE Team Emirates rider could not resist and won the stage to become only the second man to win five mountain stages in a Tour, after Italian Gino Bartali in 1948.
Pogacar also had no need to attack on Sunday, given he had a lead of more than five minutes over Vingegaard overnight.
But the lure of another stage win proved too strong and he rode the winding roads past the picturesque towns of Ze and Villefranche-sur-Mer on the approach to Nice, where the course flattened out again.
Pogacar held out three fingers towards the finish line and a sixth stage victory in this year's Tour came within reach, the same number of stages he won during his dominance of the Giro d'Italia.

It is Pogacar's biggest margin of victory in his three Tour wins, beating the 5:20 margin over Vingegaard three years ago, but less than the 7:29 margin Vingegaard enjoyed over Pogacar last year.
The battle with Vingegaard was not as close as it might have been in other circumstances.
Vingegaard, 27, was hospitalized for nearly two weeks in April following a high-speed crash during the Tour of the Basque Country. He only returned to racing during this Tour.
