I talked about it on Instagram but I never had the time to make it an official New Kid: Predictthe Lower East Side’s one-of-a-kind luxury fashion brand, opened a boutique on Worth last November, showcasing its women’s collection, including daywear, eveningwear, lingerie, handbags, jewelry, shoes, and apparel made from vintage and antique textiles. This is their fourth store in the city; they also have three stores in a row on Hester: a men’s shoe store and a “one-of-a-kind” store; a tailoring shop on Canal; and a boutique in Los Angeles.
Emily Adams Bode Aujla (Bode is her maiden name) founded the brand in 2016 as a series of menswear pieces made from vintage textiles. Three years later, she was named Emerging Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, chaired by Thom Browne, and has gone on to win awards from Forbes, GQ, and other design organizations. She was the first woman to walk the menswear show at New York Fashion Week,
She is married to interior designer Aaron Aujla, co-founder of Green River Project, who designs the interiors of her stores and their homes. (The couple lived in Chinatown until recently, when they had their first child and moved to the West Village. Look at this house here.)
The clothes are all new and reimagined from their original versions. For example, one dress in the shop was once a Mexican shawl. And some of the new fabrics take on a vintage feel through their design. The Gilded Rose top currently available on the website ($780) is handmade from deadstock and features a mother-of-pearl button from a now-defunct button factory in Iowa. The ready-to-wear Sandbank T-shirt ($310) is inspired by an actual 1960s shirt; Bode replicated the cotton fabric from Portugal to create the look.
It focuses on craftsmanship, connection and preservation – not only of the fabric itself, but also of technique and quality.
