Olympic Fashion: Ranking the Best and Worst Team Uniforms

If you're a social media user, you've probably seen countless TikTok and Instagram posts of athletes showing off their Paris Olympics gear. Since some of us don't get to wear those uniforms, we at least deserve to have some fun comparing outfits. Here are some of our favorite and least favorite uniforms from the 2024 Games, from worst to best.

Ireland

The prize for worst attire goes to Ireland. The Irish look at the opening ceremony suggests that all the athletes are about to do karate. Even if that were the case, where is all the green?

Guatemala

Guatemala’s uniform is certainly eye-catching. Their flag colours are sky blue and white, so the bright green and blue are a surprising choice. The outfit seems to have been inspired by Peter Pan. At the same time, the look is quite simple, clearly missing the beautiful embroidery and long skirts that are part of traditional Guatemalan clothing. This is a no for me.

Australia

Australian colours are pretty vibrant, so statement outfits are almost expected. All colours aside, tennis dresses are on trend, shorts are cute and loungewear looks comfy. I mean they tried their best, but skirts? There's no excuse for these:

Spain

These uniforms showcase Spain's beautiful, vibrant red, yellow and white colours. The Opening Ceremony outfits are made from recycled fabric (and we love sustainability), but the look is not interesting. The Spanish have an advantage over the Aussies for making that skirt look so much better. Hope you're taking notes, Australia.

Team USA

These outfits make Team USA look like the Barden Bellas of Perfect pitch or a race car team. Interesting look, but they'll probably pull it off. The rest of their uniforms have some cool pieces, some classy, some vintage. I don't support their choice of font though. I have mixed feelings about it.

Italy

Believe it or not, Italy's look for the Opening Ceremony is basically a hoodie and sweatpants. Isn't this one of the fashion capitals of the world? I guess it's pretty classic and looks pretty comfortable, and the rest of their gear is tasteful. While they're missing a lot of red, white, and green, I like this display of athleticism. Bonus points for being Armani.

Haiti

The 12 athletes representing Haiti will attract plenty of attention when they arrive at the Opening Ceremony in these stunning outfits. The traditional pants and skirts are covered in a vibrant pattern, straight out of a painting by a Haitian artist. The look is intentionally bold, a powerful reminder of Haiti’s resilience and hope.

The Netherlands

The Netherlands definitely takes the cake for the most chic look. The denim outfits, vintage varsity jackets, and colorful scarves are simple, unique, and well-put-together. If you had to say something about the outfits not having enough orange, here is their look for the opening ceremony:

Mongolia

No detail was left to chance when creating the Mongolian uniform. Its elegant look is inspired by traditional Mongolian dresses, with vests covered in beautiful symbolic embroidery. The women's outfits are embellished with pearl earrings and elaborate handbags. Each outfit reportedly took 20 hours to complete.

Canada

This opinion may be biased, but there's no denying that Team Canada set the bar high by wearing trendy streetwear to the ceremonies. Andat the Olympic Village. Lululemon’s outfits were fun, sporty and focused on inclusivity and adaptability. Hidden within the uniform designs were Canada’s iconic maple leaf and 10 animals representing Canada’s nine provinces and France.

Dressed in red and white from head to toe, with a perfect combination of symbolism and style, all eyes will be on the Canadians as they enter the venue.
