According to the first review of the new mystery novel, the story’s antagonist is a male serial killer who wears robes as he hunts and fools his victims, who are female.
Jake Kerridge of the Telegraph wrote the “moral seems to be: never trust a man in a robe”.
The archetype is built on a decades-old trope that defines gender nonconformity, and transgender women in particular, as violent murderers.
The novel’s release comes after Rowling published an essay in June reaffirming his take on transgender people, whom many Harry Potter fans have called transphobic. The essay includes a false argument that an “explosion” of young women is transitioning after accessing transitional care like hormone replacement therapy.
“There’s absolutely no way that jk Rowling has written a trans character as a villain in her new book, either she’s completely dumb or she clearly has no shame or remorse for her blatant transphobia,” a Twitter user wrote.
“The villain of JK Rowling’s latest novel is trans,” another user wrote. “The people who hang out with it, as they say, are going to eat it. Dear me.”
Rowling’s new villain builds on decades-old transphobic trope in the media – trans women are just deranged serial killers in dresses
Novels and films like “Silence of the Lambs” and “Dressed to Kill” portray transgender women and women as violent murderers.
“For decades, Hollywood has been teaching the public how to respond to trans people,” Nick Adams, GLAAD’s director of trans media and representation, said in the Netflix documentary “Disclosure”.
“And sometimes we teach them that the way to react to us is fear, that we are dangerous, that we are psychopaths, that we are serial killers that we must be deviants or perverts.” a dress if you are a man. ‘”
Critics say Rowling’s “Troubled Blood” is no different.
“Gee, she spent months stoking the flames of trans-panic right before releasing a book with a murderous pseudo-trans villain? If you wanna make dots this easy to connect, JK, could you at least have them? make it form, like a picture of a cat when you’re done? ” a Twitter user wrote.
Although they feature men dressed as women as the killers, they continue to promote the myth that trans-female gender variance leads to murder.
Much like when Rowling posted a series of transphobic tweets in June, some fans are far beyond disappointment.
“Your legacy was established. You have inspired legions of readers to become better people,” a user wrote. “So you decided you were going to be the worst kind of villain.” The kind that would make Voldemort shiver.
Cynthia Nixon said JK Rowling’s comments on sex were ‘really painful’ for her trans son
JK Rowling wrote a controversial statement about transgender people in response to being labeled “TERF.” Here is what it means.
‘Harry Potter’ trans fans say they’re devastated by JK Rowling’s transphobia – but some say it’s a distraction from violence against trans blacks
