Fashion and perfume with Louis Vuitton: inside Sharon Alexie’s exquisite French getaway

Fashion is a sensory experience, and for many, the finishing touch to an outfit is scent. When artist and model Sharon Alexie joined the Louis Vuitton roster with an appearance in her Volt campaign, she made Nicolas Ghesquire’s futuristic looks effortless. To further immerse herself in the world of the brand, Alexie traveled to Grasse, France this weekend for Les Fontaines Parfumees, a perfume workshop exploring the art of craftsmanship. For Alexie, the trip was an opportunity to learn more about a subject that has always fascinated her. “I didn’t have a lot of knowledge about perfumery, but I was still very attached to the importance of smelling good,” she shared via email. “It changed the relationship I had with scents because I was able to learn about the different types of perfume production processes.”

A conversation with Vuitton’s master perfumer, Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud, allowed him to discover how a perfume goes from an idea to an aroma. As a third generation nose, Cavallier-Belletrud has been at the origin of every Vuitton fragrance since its launch in 2016. Winner of the Prix International du Parfum, the highest distinction in the industry, she was the ideal person to guide Alexie and his colleagues through the workshop. “It was fascinating to be able to see perfume as an artistic and artisanal process and purpose, not just a simple product that we consume,” she says. “It makes us travel, reminds us [our] memories, participates in the memory of others, [and] it marks our personality. Mr. Cavallier said it very well: “perfume is the last thing that remains when you undress, it’s on the skin”.

Adorned with her Vuitton favorites during her stay in Grasse, Alexie was able to discover the best of her latest collections. A fan of casual wear with what she describes as an I don’t care vibe, she was drawn to Ghesquire’s statement accessories and oversized dividers. Just as she dresses to match her feelings rather than specific trends, Alexie pairs her outfit with her scents. Like clothes, I think perfume is more representative of my state of mind, of a stage in my life, of a country I’m in, of mood, she says. I loved wearing the black vest with hints of color during dinner at Fred’s; it is beautiful and comfortable. It was a truly exceptional evening because it brought us together, and we were able to discuss, learn from each other over a good meal, and a good game of pétanque.

During the masterclass, Alexie received an overview of the latest fragrances in the line and modern classics like Apoge and Rose des Vents. Already fan of notes linked to his memories, the new intoxicating version, Mtore was in his alley. I generally like very sweet and fresh smells, but also strong and imposing smells. And sometimes I mix the two, she explains, checking her favorite note. Vanilla is a smell [that] do not leave me. I look for it in all perfumes; it reminded me of my carelessness and my quest for myself when I was younger. After days of enjoying all the offerings of the French Riviera, Alexie returned home with a new signature scent and a new understanding. Now I’m going to be looking more for a scent that goes well with my skin and not just a scent that smells good isolated from me.
