How the Nashville fashion community is pivoting their efforts (and how you can help)

At the beginning of March, before one of us realized the imminent effects of the coronavirus, we got together to shoot our annual luxury edition of What to Wear, inspired by Nashville Fashion Week. Although the event is now postponed from August 4 to 8, 2020, we are here to bring a dose of style to your living room. And although our current reality does not allow for much avant-garde sewing (many of us are not out of our sweatpants yet), there is much to be said for the pleasing fashion inspiration. So rather than deleting this month’s edition of What to Wear, we pay tribute to the creators who have worked so hard to give us an exciting insight into what’s going to happen.

Leslie Taylor Stephens, the creator of Nashville Ola Mai, lent his style and great pieces at our photo shoot at 14TENN, a beautiful place in The Nations. She also worked in collaboration with the creative director and co-founder of Nashville Fashion Week, Connie Cathcart-Richardson. Discover the magnificent collection of the Leslie line, as well as other haute couture sets of Gus Mayer and fellow designers from Nashville Article X, Rank & Sugar and Laura Lemon, brilliantly modeled by Brittany Jenkins and Jenner Johnson.

Nashville Fashion Week

We asked Connie about the difficult decision to postpone all of Nashville Fashion Week events. “When we made this decision,” she said, “we were absolutely devastated to have to go. Even if [the spread of the virus] was not to the point that right now you could see the writing on the wall. We got the punch with the tornado, so a lot of our friends and businesses associated with or affiliated with Fashion Week were affected by this. And the next thing you know, here is this. It was just that it was not the right time to move forward. “

Although they canceled much of Fashion Week, they still planned to continue the Shop Nashville initiative and the learning labs, but that was also postponed. “We were really hoping to do it because our pressure is always to promote our local designers and businesses and to shop in small sizes,” says Connie, “but between the time we made the decision and now, this thing s is intensified. It has become increasingly evident that we cannot even do this. So we moved everything in August. “

On a positive note, Connie adds, “We have the biggest and best celebration of 10 years. already planned for this year. As of this minute, it looks like we can pick it up and move it to August. Everyone is united and encouraging and on board. We have 84 events scheduled from August 4 to 8, and let me say that canceling 84 events was much easier than planning 84 events! “

Designer Leslie Taylor Stephens tells us that things are very different in the Ola Mai workshop these days. “Currently, I’m sewing masks for our local hospitals instead of putting the finishing touches on my collection,” she says. “I’m certainly sad that Nashville Fashion Week is postponed as we tackle the pandemic, but I feel like I’ll be even stronger on the runway in August. We will all urgently need fun nights and celebrate 10 years of our beloved fashion week. “If his goldenrod pantsuit is an indication of what will happen, we can’t wait!

How you can still support local businesses and designers

Despite the postponement, the objective of Fashion Week remains. “Our mission from day one has been to support the local fashion community and to focus on our commitment to small businesses,” says Connie. “This is what we plan to continue doing on social media. We went ahead and launched our Nashville Store Web Page. There were local businesses that were going to be our partners at Shop Nashville. Instead of logging into the events they planned, we republish from their websites, update social media, and spread the word. Instead of worrying about the sale, it’s about surviving this stage for everyone. “

Connie says, “This is a very strange and strange time, and we are sort of lowering ourselves right now and supporting people individually and doing what we can. But right now, Nashville Fashion Week isn’t as important. We are just trying to help our friends, neighbors and our community to overcome this together. This is what we continue to preach at Nashville Strong. “

Fortunately, the fashion community has rallied behind the change in calendar for Nashville Fashion Week. So what can we expect in August? Connie says, “Exactly what we planned. Plus, hopefully, some more good things that we can add by then. With 21 designers showing their work for four nights, as well as seven learning labs, there is much to expect. “From that moment on, we anticipate that all of our special guests will be able to attend the grand, which is a roundtable on the inclusion of diversity,” Connie tells us. Fern Mallis, the creator of New York Fashion Week, will host the panel, which also includes Timo Weiland, Tanya Taylor, Peter Som and Barry Grider. They also plan to move forward in their discussion on suffrage and to expose with Tennessee State Museum, which Connie quipped: “We are going to celebrate women’s rights and the fact that we can wear whatever we want now!”

One of the most inspiring elements of Nashville Fashion Week, in partnership with OZ Arts Nashvilleis his philanthropy. Committed to helping our Nashville compatriots who are facing devastation and who need disaster relief, the event is diverting its attention from the Nashville Fashion Forward Fund to support the Middle Tennessee Emergency Response Fund, both managed by Middle Tennessee Community Foundation.
