New South Korean retail building looks like molting insect
The Galleria, the oldest department store franchise in South Korea, recently opened a new store in one of the country’s newest cities, Gwanggyo.
The building, the sixth branch of Gallerias, has at the very least a very unique design. The facade combines multifaceted glass that seems to come out of the interior of the opaque stone, as if the building was losing its old skin and revealing the new.

Appearing like a carved stone emerging from the ground, the store is a visual anchor in the city. A public road is dug in the stone volume and connects the public sidewalk to a roof garden which includes commercial and cultural activities. Glass, on the other hand, reveals to passers-by the cultural and commercial activities that take place inside. For those inside, glass creates new points of view to discover Gwanggyo. The public loop is made up of a sequence of cascading terraces and offers spaces for exhibitions and performances.
Eight unique departments are spread over the 12 floors of the buildings:
First floor – Boutique and jewelry
Second floor – Prestige Boutique
Third floor and crazyr – Women’s fashion
Fifth floor – Men’s fashion
Sixth floor – Children and family + Mega Shop
Seventh and eighth floors – Sport and leisure, home and life
New floor– Dining room
Tenand eleven floor – Cinema
Floor 12 – Salon and Academy
