Life Upended: the personal stylist adapts because clothes are no longer a priority

Life turned upside down. The coronavirus outbreak has had a devastating impact on our country and has affected the people of Staten Island in countless ways. In this series, journalist Tracey Porpora will share the stories of those who were thrown into unimaginable situations just a few months ago – those who saw their lives completely turned upside down. This is the seventeenth story of Life turned upside down.

STATEN ISLAND, NY – John Anthony has been dressing hordes of Staten Island business professionals for six and a half years. From bespoke suits to golf apparel, he makes sure men have the perfect fit.

As a personal stylist and brand ambassador in Texas J. Hilburn, business was booming for Anthony.

Then, the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) sheltered people on site and forced many companies to rethink their workspace.

The result has been that many Anthonys clients now work from home – some permanently – rather than in an office.

And that hardly leaves any need for work clothes.

My goal is to keep my customers out of department stores and have them shop directly through me by building a personalized profile that fits their body, budget, and schedule. … We offer our customers a tailored garment that doesn’t have to break the bank, Anthony said.

I reached out to my clients to make sure they knew their health was my priority. Clothing is not a priority. These guys are on Zoom calls now. … I dressed men for the Zoom calls, said Anthony.

As well as not needing proper formal attire, coronavirus regulations made it difficult for Anthony to do his job in person.

It’s impossible to stay six feet from someone while measuring them for a costume, he said.

Plus, many of her clients – especially those who may have lost their jobs – aren’t looking for a new wardrobe. It’s difficult at the moment. You want to be sensitive to the needs of customers. People are late on every bill. People are losing their homes. They are out of work, ”he said.

PRE-NEGOTIATED BANKRUPTCY

To top it off, his partner, J. Hillburn – a brand that works directly with garment factories and creates bespoke clothing – has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection amid the pandemic.

But with the help of an isolated investor, the company has been supplied with cash, with hopes that more men will turn to personalized shopping as many domestic retailers file for bankruptcy.

we [J.Hillburn] have been in business for 13 years. No one has ever seen anything like it, and duration is killing businesses everywhere – especially restaurant businesses. On May 1, we had to file a pre-negotiated Chapter 11 request. When we saw that there was an opportunity for us to go bankrupt, like the many brick-and-mortar stores, we knew we had to do something. .. We were emptying what we had in the bank. … We found an existing investor, who made a very big investment in us because of COVID, Anthony said.

So as a result of COVID we were on the verge of bankruptcy, but also as a result of COVID this investor looked at the retail landscape as a whole – and saw this as a tremendous opportunity to buy more from an existing relationship business, with around 2,000 stylists nationwide dressing half a million men, he added.

He said the company was out of bankruptcy, fueled our supply chain, and we were good to go.

As a result, I am building a bigger business and I need stylists, Anthony said.

REINVENTING THE ACTIVITY

But doing business as a stylist during the pandemic does not come without many challenges.

Through J. Hillburns Tape technology – which allows Anthony to measure a customer for attire via the phone or the Internet – he’s reinventing the way he does business.

While he has metrics for his existing clients, for new clients he may have an initial phone conversation – after which a client fills out a questionnaire through an app.

Based on the answers, I can build a wardrobe for them, Anthony said.

LACK OF HUMAN INTERACTION

However, lost sales was not the only ordeal Anthony suffered during the pandemic. In fact, the self-proclaimed extrovert said he suffered more psychological damage than financial damage during the crisis.

Im an outgoing, outgoing person, he says. I really miss my clients. I miss sitting with them and bringing lunch to their desk. … Sending SMS is not the same as face to face. There is definitely a psychological and emotional impact with this. We’re still doing business, but it’s not the same. Instead of personalized service from me, it’s [the clothing] be deposited by UPS. … Right now, I just want to be respectful of my clients’ homes and lives.

The clients I have are not necessarily rich. These are only people who receive personalized service. … These are people who want clothes specially designed for their body. I offer them personalized service from the comfort of their own homes, said Anthony. (Courtesy of John Anthony)

MEN’S STATEN ISLAND DRESSING

Anthony built his business on Staten Island shortly after Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc in the borough on October 29, 2012.

I then realized that Staten Island was truly the forgotten borough and I knew I had to start my business here, Anthony said, noting he had clients all over the Tristate area. I deal with many restaurateurs, real estate agents, mortgage brokers and other professionals.

The clients I have are not necessarily rich. These are only people who receive personalized service. … These are people who want clothes specially designed for their body. I offer them personalized service from the comfort of their own home, he added.

One of the benefits of the pandemic has been increased demand for tuxedo sales. With men reluctant to rent a tuxedo during the health crisis, Anthony said more people were buying tuxedos in anticipation of weddings and upcoming affairs.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
