Coronavirus: Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti Calls On Fashion Industry To Produce Masks For Front Line Workers

LOS ANGELES, California (KABC) – Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has called on the fashion industry to help provide protective masks to people on the front lines, like grocery stores and delivery people who come into contact with day-to-day routine with the public.

Garcetti announced the L.A. Protects initiative during a daily coronavirus briefing on Thursday evening. The plan will put the City in partnership with Reformation, a local manufacturing company that produces a line of sustainable clothing.

The company now uses its factory to make masks and actively encourages others in the fashion district to follow.

“The masks produced as part of this partnership are not N95 medical grade masks, but they are designed to meet the needs of other Angelenos on the front line,” said Garcetti to the presser on Thursday.

Although the masks are not medical grade, Kaiser Permanente participated in the development of the mask design specifications and the design specifications are now open source to the public.

Other companies in southern California are joining efforts to contribute to this cause. AST Sportswear in Brea is doing its part by switching from the manufacture of t-shirts to the manufacture of masks. The company aims to donate one million masks by the end of April.

“I have to do something, I have a big factory, I can do something,” said Abdul Rasheed, CEO of AST sportswear.

This combined effort has also reached manufacturers across the country. Owners of a factory in Pennsylvania that manufactures the official Major League Baseball jerseys have started using their fabrics and facilities to produce masks and gowns.

Bauer Hockey usually produces hockey helmets, now it has redesigned its facilities to make medical face shields.

“To be part of this program and help us reach our goal of producing five million non-medical masks here in southern California,” said Garcetti in his call to action.
