Welcome to the first installment of The Investment, a new regular column highlighting those coins – a little more expensive, much prettier, and quite valid – that we can’t help but defend for you. These are the things our editors love and respect. Peaks with a story to tell and a real reason to exist. Are you looking to put your money in the right place? Here’s how.
It’s hard to imagine that a small black nylon backpack could have caused all the noise it made in 1984, when Miuccia Prada first posed it as the new statement of minimalist luxury. Until then, luxury – especially in accessories – pretty much meant leather or nothing. It certainly didn’t mean nylon. But Miuccia’s intellectual finger clung to traditional, fixed notions of elegance not only suggesting nylon as a new definition of luxury, but it also brought a sense of minimalist utility that had too often been absent from fashion.
When, for the fall of 1995, she launched her first men’s collection, Prada’s craze for the small triangular logo blew up the gender divide. In stark contrast to the glitzy, ’70s-inspired fashion that was elsewhere on the catwalk, Prada was clean, devoid of patterns or embellishments – a futurist’s uniform. And if to emphasize that it was not business as usual, Prada hired men who were not models, but serious actors, to create its first campaigns. For four seasons, John Malkovich, Tim Roth, Willem Dafoe, and Joaquin Phoenix have effectively endorsed Prada as the label of the modern, cool and thinking man. And that black nylon was everywhere: from accessories to costumes, it became sort of a shortcut for ’90s minimalism.
Sustainability now and forever.
Last year, a growing interest in sustainability in fashion prompted the launch of a new type of nylon at Prada. It looked like the old one, but this time it was 100% recycled. To launch this new fabric, Miuccia Prada also chose to recycle some of her thoughts, recreating six of the best-selling styles for men and women from the 90s. ReNylon, as the fabric is called internally, is the result of a long collaboration between Prada and the Italian yarn manufacturer Aquafil. It is made from collected plastic fishing nets, sea waves and textile fiber waste like mats from recycled landfills in Italy and Slovenia. Aquafil first breaks down, then re-polymerizes, the materials, turning the monofilaments into new nylon yarn. Last year, Aquafil estimated that for every 10,000 tonnes of Econyl produced from recycled plastics, 70,000 barrels of oil would be saved.
Far beyond bags.
This month Prada takes it one step further by expanding the ReNylon range to include men’s and women’s clothing and footwear, like this no-frills but eminently luxurious puffer jacket made from a silk-like nylon called by the brand Piuma (Italian for feather). that makes a super lightweight piece that you can wear on its own or layered under an overcoat. It brings all the ’90s feel that the rest of the ReNylon line offers in everything from anoraks and joggers to a zip-front shirt, and, for our money, is one of the more perfect selections. adapted from the collection.
Oh, did you think sustainability was going to end?
Not all sustainability efforts are created equal. While some brands only seek to create one-step recycling, Prada’s ReNylon is designed so that it is not just recycled – it is also endlessly recyclable, and without loss of quality or durability. material. Prada promised at the launch to use this property to ensure that 100% of the nylon used by the company would be made from ReNylon by the end of 2021, thus creating a closed circle that does not create a virgin petroleum-based ingredients. Which means by clicking on here you help save the planet and get killer jacket. In addition, being infinitely recyclable, your puffer could one day be reincarnated in a backpack or a zipped tote. You might even buy it twice. How cool is that?
