It’s hard to imagine that a small black nylon backpack could have caused all the noise it made in 1984, when Miuccia Prada first posed it as the new statement of minimalist luxury. Until then, luxury – especially in accessories – pretty much meant leather or nothing. It certainly didn’t mean nylon. But Miuccia’s intellectual finger clung to traditional, fixed notions of elegance not only suggesting nylon as a new definition of luxury, but it also brought a sense of minimalist utility that had too often been absent from fashion.

When, for the fall of 1995, she launched her first men’s collection, Prada’s craze for the small triangular logo blew up the gender divide. Last year, a growing interest in sustainability in fashion prompted the launch of a new type of nylon at Prada. It looked like the old one, but this time it was 100% recycled. To launch this new fabric, Miuccia Prada also chose to recycle some of her thoughts, recreating six of the best-selling styles for men and women from the 90s. ReNylon, as the fabric is called internally, is the result of a long collaboration between Prada and the Italian yarn manufacturer Aquafil. It is made from collected plastic fishing nets, sea waves and textile fiber waste like mats from recycled landfills in Italy and Slovenia. Aquafil first breaks down, then re-polymerizes, the materials, turning the monofilaments into new nylon yarn. Last year, Aquafil estimated that for every 10,000 tonnes of Econyl produced from recycled plastics, 70,000 barrels of oil would be saved.
