A Ugandan won the men’s race at today’s World Half Marathon Championships in Gdynia, Poland, but he was not the 5k / 10k world record holder Joshua Cheptegei.

Instead, it was his youngest compatriot, Jacob Kiplimo, who emerged from the shadow of Cheptegeis to win his first senior world title, using a 13:38 split from 15km to 20km to part with the pitch and power for victory in a new championship and a Ugandan record of 58:49 in just his second half of marathon career. Kenyas Kibiwott Kandie finished second in 58:54 and Ethiopia Amedework Walelegn third in 59:08 while Cheptegei was fourth on his debut in 59:21.

We analyze the victory of Kiplimos and the rest of the race below.

Quick Take: Jacob Kiplimo gets his moment

For most of 2020 – and indeed, for most of his young career – Jacob Kiplimo was eclipsed by fellow Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei. Last year he would have been the first Ugandan to win a World XC medal since 2010 – if Cheptegei hadn’t crossed the finish line four seconds earlier. Kiplimos thrilling 12: 48.63 5,000 wins in Ostrava would have been the race of the year and a Ugandan record – if Cheptegei had not beaten the WR a month earlier. Between this 12:48 and his 7: 26.64 3000 in Rome, Kiplimo would have been the history in distance racing this year without Cheptegei.

Today, the young Ugandan got his debt, winning his first senior world title on a high note. And he made it look easy – Kiplimo never seemed to be tense and felt natural in what was his first serious attempt at the 13.1 mile distance (he had only run one previous half marathon. , a victory of 61:53 at altitude in Kampala in November 2019).

Quick Catch: Do we have a Federer-Nadal situation brewing in Uganda?

Over the past 19 months, Joshua Cheptegei has been, without a doubt, the greatest long-distance runner in the world. World titles in XC and on track, a Diamond League 5000 title, world records in 5 km and 10 km on road and track. He’s clearly a huge talent.

But could Kiplimo be equal bigger Talent?

There are a few questions about Kiplimo’s exact age – if his birthday on November 14, 2000 is correct, that means he ran 27:26 for 10k by the age of 15. Regardless of whether his age is totally correct, Kiplimo looks very young and he runs a lot faster and accomplishes more than Cheptegei (born September 12, 1996) at the same age.

Both men were world champions as juniors (Kiplimo at World XC in 2017, Cheptegei in the 10km track in 2014), but Kiplimos 7:26 bp is faster than Cheptegei has ever run for 3km and the fastest time recorded in 13 years, and his 12:48 5k is way faster than anything Cheptegei had raced before 2020. Now, at the official age of 19, Kiplimo has a World silver medal XC and a world half-gold.

It reminds us of the situation that unfolded in men’s tennis ten years ago. Roger Federer came and started winning majors left and right, quickly building a CV as the greatest of all time. People thought he was the greatest tennis player in history. No one can ever get past that.

Then Raphael Nadal and Novak Djokovic appeared and suddenly it was not clear if Federer was even the greatest player of his generation.

Given his 5,000 and 10,000 world records, we imagine most still view Cheptegei as the favorite for gold in Tokyo next year, but Kiplimo is a serious contender. Think about it. If Kiplimo is faster (based on his 3,000 bp) and has better endurance (based on his half marathon), then wouldn’t he also be better at 5,000 and 10,000? If their battles are like the ones we’ve seen in men’s tennis in recent years, running fans will be delighted.

In the final stages of the race, commentator Tim hutchings summed up pretty much exactly what we were thinking of when we posted on the bulletin board at the halfway point.

Quick catch: Joshua Cheptegei handled the loss with class and showed great sportsmanship

Cheptegei with great sportsmanship

One of our favorite things about racing today was what happened when it was over. It was clear that the two Ugandan men clearly have a lot of respect for each other. Cheptegei, after crossing the finish line in 4th today, immediately went to congratulate Kiplimo, lifting him off the ground in a bear hug.

Quick catch: Joshua Cheptegei has nothing to be ashamed of

While many expected Cheptegei to win this race, running 59:21 on your debut and finishing 4th behind a few spikes at Kiplimo and Kibiwott Kandie is by no means a poor performance.

If anything, Cheptegei deserves a ton of credit for showing up and testing himself at a new distance. For Farah chose to take a paycheck and beat the London Marathon rather than running here today. Sifan Hassan | was in great shape but retired earlier this week. Cheptegei could easily have finished his season after his 10k record 10 days ago, but he chose to show up and race here. And although the result was not what he wanted, he drew a lot of attention to the event and the race was more exciting because of his presence. The sport needs its biggest stars to show up at its championships, and Cheptegei has. Well done to him.

Plus, we think the loss could be great for him in the long run. Instead of thinking I’m the tallest in history and starting to rest on his laurels, he’s now extremely motivated as the offseason approaches, asking himself: Am I even the best guy in my life? own country?

MB:Josh Cheptegei shouldn’t have run half the world

Quick take: Tactically, there wasn’t much the other contenders could have done to beat Kiplimo today

The pace up front was not very fast over 5 km (pace 14:19 – 60:24) or 10 km (pace 28:23 – 59:52), which meant that there were still 23 men. in the leading pack at 10 km. You could say that played into the strength of Kiplimo, who showed earlier this year that he has big wheels and a serious kick.

But I’m not sure that a faster opening 10k would have produced a different result. Kiplimos’ victory time was 58:49. Only one man who arrived had run faster than that (Kibiwott Kandies 58:38, who came in a rabbit race in Prague). Kiplimo divided 13:38 from 15 km to 20 km. Who, exactly, was going to run fast enough to drop him today?

Quick take: just like the women’s run, the men’s run was incredibly deep

Today’s race was just the second half marathon in history in which 10 men broke 60:00 (the first was the RAK Half 2019). And times were quick all the way down the list. Twenty-eight men beat 61:00, 38 beat 62:00, and in all, 68 of the 117 finalists (58%) achieved personal bests. Which makes sense considering the conditions were perfect for running (48 degrees, 6 mph wind) and shoe technology has taken a significant leap forward in recent years.
