PARIS Austria’s Dominic Thiem has joined world number one Novak Djokovic to withdraw from next week’s Paris Masters after struggling with blisters on his feet at the Vienna Open.
US Open champion Thiem complained about the problem after his title defense in Vienna ended in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Thiem would have had little time to recover since the last ATP Masters 1000 event of the year will start on Monday.
He is expected to take the break to rest before heading to London for the end-of-season ATP Finals, which take place November 15-22.
Defending champion Djokovic has chosen not to participate in the Paris tournament as he will not lose any ranking points under the revised ATP Tours system this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Rafael Nadal will be the Paris Masters seed, while Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas will be placed second with seven of the top 10 male players participating in the tournament.
Nadal, who won his record-breaking 20th Grand Slam title at Roland Garros this month, will return to Paris to tie Djokovics’ record of 36 ATP Masters 1000 titles.
The Spaniard has a bye in the first round and will open his Parisian campaign against Filip Krajinovic or Feliciano Lopez in the second round.
Russians Andrey Rublev and Argentinian Diego Schwartzman are also hoping for the two remaining places in the ATP final, which is played between the top eight male solo players, with strong results in Paris.
