Harry Styles in a robe is no threat to masculinity

Harry Styles is human perfection. He’s incredibly good looking, incredibly talented, and an amazing human. The musician recently appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine (the first time a man was on the cover) and people have feelings. On the cover, Styles dons a light blue Gucci tailoring of a dress. The reactions to her wearing the dress are largely ecstatic, but of course there are haters. Loudest and most eloquent is conservative expert Candace Owens. After the Vogue Features released, Owens took to Twitter to complain, saying there is no society that can survive without strong men. As if Styles wearing a dress somehow undermined his masculinity. It’s 2020, the time for the end of these narrow visions of what is male and female. Strong men can also wear dresses, of course.

Candace Owens is one of those black women who has become a shill of the alternative right. It should be noted that until perhaps three years ago she was critical of Trump and the Right. Then apparently overnight, she makes one. So now she’s touting her ignorance and foolishness for the whole world to hear. Obviously, she likes to stir up controversy, especially when she knows it will piss off her rabid supporters.

The real question here is, what is a strong man? Like, does she think every straight woman wants to be with the guy on the Brawny napkins? Do women really want to be only with men who look like Dwayne Johnson? If you want to make a claim about manly men then you had better have specific examples of what you mean, as it’s clear we’re all working on different definitions here.

A quick Google search shows that her own husband is a fairly generic white man. So what authority does she have to say that we need “strong manly men”? She is literally married to the human embodiment of Wonder Bread. Harry Styles is a god among men, so maybe she needs to clarify the facts.

It’s not even like Harry Styles was the first musician to experiment with clothing. From David Bowie to Prince to Kurt Cobain, male musicians have been wearing more feminine or more feminine clothes for a very long time. The amount of lycra worn by Bowie as alter ego Ziggy Stardust is plentiful. And Prince rocked hell with a purple jumpsuit and heels. Freddie Mercury exuded masculinity and was always dressed like a harlequin jester. Harry wearing a Gucci dress is hardly revolutionary.

Toxic masculinity is a very real thing. The Good Men project defines it this way:

Toxic masculinity is a narrow and repressive description of virility, denoting virility as defined by violence, sex, status, and aggression. It is the cultural ideal of virility, where strength is everything while emotions are weakness; where sex and brutality are criteria by which men are measured, while supposedly feminine traits that can range from emotional vulnerability to simply not being hypersexual are the means by which your male status can be taken away.

Candace Owens and her followers are perfect examples of what happens when you subscribe to this line of thinking. Their view of what is masculine is archaic at best. A lumberjack with an ax and a mustache is no more masculine than Harry Styles in a robe, and those are the facts.

When you remove Theres clothes for men and Theres clothes for women, once you remove the barriers you obviously open the arena in which you can play. I go to stores sometimes and find myself looking at women’s clothes thinking they’re amazing, Styles says in the Vogue interview.

Fortunately, we live in a time when men are trying to redefine what masculinity looks like. They reject the violence of toxic masculinity. And many are actively trying to be better people. Whether it means tapping into their emotions or avoiding traditionally masculine dress styles. It’s important to see them actively begin to unravel these archaic views of masculinity. Men who want to be better humans and embrace who they really are ultimately benefit everyone.

But of course, Candance and her brothers (who includes Twitter troll Ben Shapiro) don’t see it that way. Unsurprisingly, Ms Owens manages to politicize Harry Styles and his dress. In a follow-up tweet, she said, in the West the constant feminization of our men at the same time as Marxism is being taught to our children is no coincidence. Join me in saying, what the fuck is this?

How does Harry Styles wear a dress and skirts To refer to Marxism? What kind of mental gymnastics does it take to come to this conclusion? Someone gave Candace an ice pack because I think she pulled a muscle with that litter.

Marxism talks about creating an anti-capitalist society and empowering workers. So how does this explain a millionaire celebrity wearing a designer dress? And what does that have to do with a dress anyway? Dresses are not political. And they are certainly not Marxists or Communists. These are pieces of fucking cloth that people wear so they won’t be naked. Why are these people so upset by a robed man that they compare him to Communist theory?

But more importantly, why do they feel Harry Styles on the cover of Vogue is a threat to men everywhere? It’s not like he’s going to start walking towards men demanding that they join him wearing skirts.

And what’s the problem, even if they become standardized for all gender identities? The dresses are very comfortable. They are less restrictive than pants, even though they don’t have pockets. Maybe more men should start wearing dresses. Let their garbage breathe a little more. They would probably be less grumpy if their balls were free, just saying.

Let me clarify things for Candace Owens and everyone else who has a problem with Harry Styles looking gorgeous and angelic in a beautiful dress. There is no one way to be masculine. Gender is a specter and we need to stop telling men there is only one way they can be. A garment is not the only indicator of a person’s gender. And if people start to understand this, we can start to eliminate toxic masculinity and literally make the world of being a better place to be. everyone.
